Chapter length?

I agree that there is no hard and fast rule, that a degree of consistency is probably helpful to the reader to establish a rhythm when reading, but that mixing it up can also be a good way to follow the surprise rhythms of your narrative.

I think that chapters work best when they give structure and pace to what you're trying to do, I.e. as others have said, when the ends and beginnings of chapters follow natural breaks or cliffhangers in the narrative.

I find my chapters come out typically somewhere between 2000 and 3000 words. I tend to try and write them to have three "beats" (scenes?) so that each chapter has a sort of arc to it with some kind of beginning, middle and end.

I don't think there is an exact rule but I personally prefer short chapters and also try to only write short chapters as I think it is easier for the reader.
