Although I'm not a published fiction writer, I am a published
vegetarian cookery writer and have decided to go back to my roots
and self-publish my latest title, The Breakfast Scoffer, which is
going to print next week once I've raised the money for the print
bill.
It is more of an illustrated booklet than a book, but the small,
cheap A5 format is massively popular with customers and under-used
for cookery (the coffee table hardback cookery market is much more
saturated). The similar, previous books were popular with both
adults and kids because they are full of original cartoon artwork.
I'm hoping this one will be equally popular.
I've pre-sold 600 copies already by using the tactics of a big
publisher (basically, I offer companies and groups with website
shops the chance to pre-order the book at 50% discount and free
postage, telling them they'll have to pay the standard two thirds
cover price if they order after publication - a tip for other
self-publishers out there who might not have thought of it). I've
got some magazines and websites interested in offering copies as
competition prizes - this effectively gives me free advertising and
creates goodwill, as I send them the books for free.
I will get cracking on selling the rest once I've got the finished
article in my hand. Phew!
