Self publication is a great way to get your first books on the market. What some forget about, is that books needs to have a visual appeal to the readers, even if it is only availble digitally.

Don't judge a book on its cover
I'm raising this issue of illustrations because it is something that is important to consider when you are going to publish your book/article. Having the right illustrations/book cover is going to make a tremendous difference to wether peoble are going to pick up your book and give it a closer look.

There is a lot of great illustrators out there that wil be able to help you with that task, and it is just about finding the right one that you think has the style you are going for.

To start with I would like to advertice my cartoon site that has cartoons suited for many different topics. They would go especially well with non-fiction books where you need to give a humours angle to a topic, or just something to break up the text, so that the readers get a break.

I do illustration work as well, and some of my work can be seen at: www.stigkristensen.com

I would like to end this with a couple of open questions to all of you:

1) Do you consider illustrations as an important part of the publication?

2) What holds you back from using illustrations when self publicating?

3) Do you "judge a book on its cover"?

If anyone has any other thoughts on the subject I would be glad to here them and discuss them.
