Well, I live in Japan. Everyone here is a size 1 1/2. So either I'm wearing something I find in my closet or I'm buying something the week of the festival after I touch down at Heathrow.

Same here in Thailand Claire. I've found something in my wardrobe and bought a new pair of shoes. (They have heels so I might just stagger across the campus and then abandon them under the table until it's time to stagger back again.)

Don't get too hung up on what to wear! A bit of make up and dangly earrings with whatever you were wearing in the day would do fine. (This applies to you too, Jock.) Honestly, no one's going to be judging you by your clothes - it's nice to dress up a bit in the evening, but it's no big deal.

Wasn’t at the gala last year but, during the day, almost everyone was casual…still, I’d advise against slogan t-shirts such as 'If I wanted to listen to an arsehole, I’d fart' or 'I don’t need sex – the Government screws me every day'… unless, of course, you can prove you designed the shirt/slogan yourself: demonstrates imagination/creativity – always a plus – to agents&publishers :)

Hehe I must get me one of those t-shirts Innocent

I wish I could have kept the full Northumbrian dress kilt I had fitted yesterday for son's wedding!

I'm wondering about a t-shirt with,
'Dear Agent...
...I'm worth it.'

I’d love to see these on t-shirts:

'Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.'

'It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous.'

'I try to leave out the parts that people skip.'

'If you want to get rich from writing, write the sort of thing that's read by persons who move their lips when they're reading to themselves.'

Is it really a no t-shirts?

I wore my Dharma initiative (as in LOST) t-shirt to the speednetworking session last year. It was a good conversation starter, and I even got a fellow participant saying "Maybe I'll see you in another live?" as we moved tables (if you're not a LOST fan, that's a famous phrase from one of the characters - Desmond).

No, no, Steph. Of course there isn't a no t-shirts rule. That refers to the post saying t-shirts that appear to criticise agents and publishers would be ill-advised. The joke just took off from there.

I think people should come dressed to reflect the (or may be 'a') genre they write in ...

Hurrah, I'd get to wear my shapeless sack (aka Roman peplos) ;) Would be agog to see the sf guys!

That's me in a pink dressing gown and fluffy slippers then, Tegels. No problem – I don't have to find any socks.

I'm concerned about how many people we may have dabbling in erotic fiction...

Thanks, Debi. I'll have to read the posts more carefully next time! Very relieved that t-shirts are permitted :-)

Am looking forward to seeing John's pink dressing gown and slippers combo ;-)

The pixies have run off with my socks again. Thinking of changing genre. May come as a train spotter. It's probably the only genre I've never attempted, so there must be a market...

Latest panic. My best clothes (I do have one or two) are in a wardrobe behind piles of junk, discarded clothes and fragile things I MUST NOT STEP ON OR I'M DEAD in my daughter's room. And she's away pretending to be a Cambridge student and using all their libraries.

It'll be jeans and t-shirt unless I employ a cat burglar.

As a hat? The tail could hang down the back like Daniel Boone.

Now there's a thought...
A tom-skin cap. I always did have a soft spot for raccoons.
