Hi there
I'm a bit confused by the wording in the festival pack - it says
the entire words that you send should be no more than 500 words and
that you should send 'the opening page or so' .
Are any of you guys entering the festival competition?
If so, have you sent the first page of your novel or the first 500
words?
Help! Please?

From the Festival Pack:
"Festival Competition This year, there will be a Festival
Competition for the best opening to a novel, book or
screenplay. It works like this: If you want to enter the
competition, then please let us know by sending an email to
info@festivalofwriting.com no later than 18th March. The email
should have FESTIVAL COMPETITION as its subject line, and your
email should include (a) your name, (b) your booking reference,
(c) an attachment containing a 2-3 sentence introduction to
your manuscript, and the opening page or so of your manuscript
The entire submission should be no longer than 500 words. If
you have a prologue, it‟s OK to send the opening page from that
or from Chapter 1. Do not send an extract from anywhere except
the start of your manuscript. Any such entries will be
immediately disqualified. We welcome non-fiction and
screenplays. Screenwriters should send the opening two pages of
their script in PDF format. Emails will be acknowledged, but
will not be responded to in detail. Don‟t put questions in
those emails – they probably won‟t be read! The competition
winner will be decided by a team of judges prior to the
Festival. The winner will be announced on Saturday evening, and
will be given a bottle of champagne and the adulation of the
masses."
So then - word count: 500 all up. I took that to mean the
maximum of whatever you had decided to send, which could
consist of:
- Prologue or start of prologue
- First chapter or start of first chapter
- Two to three introductory sentences if required
Regardless of what you send, it can't be more than 500 words in
total.

The festival pack was, of course, better formatted than that!

Apologies, not if
required. This has been asked for for every
entry.

I sent 500 words of my first chapter and stuck my elevator pitch at
the beginning. I didn't read it was all meant to be 500 so I may be
disqualified as it's 557.

Thanks guys. I think that'll be about one and a half pages of the
first chapter, plus the intro paragraph to bring me to 500
words.

Serves me right if they do for not reading the criteria correctly.
Not that I'd win anyway.

Tut, tut, Tors - where's your positive attitude? You've got a
fantastic story - there's no reason why you couldn't win :-)
