So... I've just been reading over the "why are heroines
Sassy/spiky" thread, and was thinking away. Just for fun, I thought
it might be interesting to brainstorm "new" types of MC. Not fully
developed characters, but instead sort of general sterotypes that
we think would provide interesting protagonists for a story, but
are somewhat underused.
Such sterotypes as "the perfect journalist", "the tinker"
etc.
For instance:
"The tinker:
The basic driving force behind such a character is that they are
motivated not by an abundant desire to do good, or gain power, but
out of simple curiousity. They will break into a government
facility not in order to sabotage it, but simply to find out how it
works. The tinker is dreamy, dissasociative, and generally fairly
relaxed."
Or something like that- I dunno. I'm not actually sure if a tinker
would be a smart choice to use as an MC now, as their lack of
direction may cause problems. Maybe the tinker would make a better
sidekick...
Anyway- I'm interested to know what types we can come up with, and
if we can find any character capable of carrying an entire novel.
Then again, maybe other people don't think like this, maybe they
build their characters from the ground up, rather than sort of
starting with a fuzzy image, and the trying to sharpen the focus in
order to fit the story.

My guess is that male writers find that kind of female character
easiest to relate to. Also, it's logical for the MC to be spiky if
she is the typical police / journalist type, and competing against
men.
But, frankly, it's a boring stereotype, unless she has other
qualities.
The shy, perceptive female character is much more interesting. Of
course, ladies will say men can't write that kind of character, and
they may be right.
I try, and I love proving people wrong.
