I'm not sure how many writers would admit they started a story just for fun. Certainly, all stories start off with a germ of an idea. Whether it grows and blossoms is something else entirely.
But, having fun while writing is highly desirable.

I sometimes do, with a favourite book, create my own chapter; the same characters from the book, but in my own way...just for myself and 'just for myself'. However, I do use my imagination to create my actual stories-not messing around! A bit of both, really! :))
