Ever get the feeling you use "!" too much when characters are talking? I do. Be interesting to know how other people approach the use of it.

Also, is there any place for !? (or is it ?!...!? looks more 'final' to me) to imply incredulity?

Merry Christmas (!)

There is no place for the symbol !
It should be clear from the dialogue and actions of the character.

Generally, I'd say only use an ! when someone shouts or reacts with surprise.

I found this from Strunk and White: “The exclamation mark is to be reserved for use after true exclamations or commands.” I tell writers not to use an exclamation mark unless they would yell or shout the statement. Exclamations are generally overused and unnecessary. Use a full stop instead.

Yes, generally, I'd suggest you only use ! as Strunk and White say ( I can't TELL you how surprised I am to find myself agreeing with S&W). For 'true exclamations':

"Hey, John! Give me that hammer, would you?"
"Cheers!"
"Just go!"
"That's hilarious!"

To imply incredulity I'd use italics:

"You said what?"
"How much was it?"
