eBooks, print, or both? How do you decide?

I moved into eBook design from a web background (as the skills are very similar - creating 'perfect' eBooks is hit and miss with Word etc, but with html you are in total control), so have been curious about print self-publishing.

It seems that it can be hugely expensive (on a per book basis), unless you buy in bulk and then you have the job of getting your books in front of buying customers. I was amazed to discover that there were companies charging well over £1000, to produce print books, when there is usually no way these books are going to get into your local Waterstones. In comparison, eBook production is low cost, and with a little online marketing it's not unreasonable to expect to cover those costs through sales.

So, I was wondering whether any writer's here had been successful with a print package, or even how realistic you found print on demand?
