Is this a bad idea? - Publishing a Collection of Short Stories on Kindle

Hi All,
I have been writing a number of short stories over the last few
months. Friends and family who know of these escapades have been
saying "I want to read some"! (Aw, thanks guys)
... So I wondered how best to share my work with them. My orignal
plan was just to send some of the stories out with my yearly
Christmas letter.... but then I thought of a (maybe) better
idea:
Self-publish a short-story collection on Kindle, for friends /
family to buy for a couple of quid.
This way, people who want to read my writing can (and those who
don't, don't have to), I get to be published and maybe reach a
wider audience, and I get some money in my pocket to boot.
(Obviously I would need to be careful not to publish anything that
I've submitted to a competition, and vice versa.)
What do others think of this plan? Is it a bad idea, is it
exploiting my friends, or is it good business sense? Do any of you
have experience of self-publishing with Kindle?
I'd be very grateful for any opinion / feedback.

Wow. Note the fact that I don't seem to doubt that my friends /
family would fork out to read my work!
Hmmm. This could be an embarrassing Christmas.

Hi Philippa,
I've just spotted your post. I've written quite a few short stories
too. Five of them have been published, but I have got quite a
collection of unpublished ones. Although I've never really
considered self-publishing before, I have recently been thinking
about it, like you. I can't help you with Kindle though, as I know
nothing about it! So - someone else - please give us some ideas!
