Another 1 K words further on my book. It's small steps but I'm getting there. :D

Thanks for the advice! Was in a dark place for a moment there. I just get irritated with myself sometimes. But I'm going to take your advice to heart; try that program and force myself to forge on without looking back. Won't be easy but I'll keep myself in line. Thanks again!

Hi Alexander, ... I also have problems keeping at it. I noticed that when using Word or whatever substitute, I got too distracted by the possibilities of editing, formatting etc.
So I looked and found something that really helps me. It's called FocusWriter.
It is a simple program and boasts a distraction free display (the menue's only appear when you mouse over them), you can set a individual background and even goals ... like 1.000 words per day or write an hour per day.
    Maybe try it. ;)
Oh, and for me, it helps listening to some meditative music or soundtracks (non-vocal), like Kitaro or KungFuPanda or the game soundtrack of Deus Ex.

Hey Alexander - you to sound like me! The only way I got round it was to give myself permission to write badly. Seriously, I used to sit there, gritting my teeth, hissing 'I can go back and fix it later. Just keep writing. Just keep writing. Just keep writing' over and over again. I think it took about a week of writing every single day (I used to write when my daughter napped, so I got a good hour and a half a day) before I finally started to feel I could let go. I also set myself a goal of 10,000 words a week, which meant I couldn't fiddle with stuff - I had to get cracking. Silly thing is, the stuff I wrote later (when I was more relaxed) was much better than the stuff I wrote when I was really 'trying'. The thing is, try not to worry that you're not picking the best words, or that your prose is too melodramatic or overwritten or whatever - just get it down, and keep going. Don't look back. Let the story build its own momentum :-)

I have no idea if that is any help... but it worked for me, so it might be worth a shot!

How do I keep myself motivated to write? I doubt myself with every word I type... It's tiring and so I'd rather not write. But all I want to do is Finish the Damn Book! Any advice for a drowning writer? It's all I want to do, but I just can't get myself to do it...

Writing of my 2nd novel (in no way related to the 1st) is steadily going on well. Have amassed 20k in 3 weeks, so the 65k target is approaching nicely... of course, 1st drafts always seem good until you re-read it and think....yuck
