Do writers of historical fiction, publishers – agents even - owe anything to historical fact?
The Duke of Wellington, the night before leading the English Navy to a famous victory at Agincourt was completing his latest best seller and said to his mistress.
‘Not tonight Hardy – Kisses only! Pray cool thy passion – for this ‘eve I must be sure my Historical Novel - wot I have writ - represents an honest attempt - based on my detailed research to tell an accurate ripping yarn set in the past.’
Elizabeth. The Golden Age, about as accurate as a Spanish weather forecaster sinking with his Flag Ship, grossed over $70 million at the Box Office.
Give Wellington and his integrity the Boot I say – Dream of the $70 million – Let’s face it – No self-respecting Novelist would argue with that!
Would they?

by BoB 2 months agoHi everyone?. Just joined Historical fiction, and only joined WC one day ago?.
I have had four books published in 2006 in Canada and all were remaind-
ered the following year.Amongst the four is my premier tome a book of historical fiction written around a true event called "Kinmel Revisited",which I understand is on the website today?.This is the story of the Kinmel Army Camp Riot in 1919 in North Wales inwhich five young men died.I have used fictional characters throughout, but sadly only have one book and on A4 today. Also I have completed another of historical fiction entitled "A Bolt From The Blue" The Halifax Explosion 1917".Also had a series of fictional crime published and remaindered. Thanks BoB. -

by tegels 1 year agoManchester seems to be a hot-bed of activity with regard to hisfic at the moment, re: upcoming events in October. Jerome de Groot - author of The Historical Novel (New Critical Idiom) - is at the university there, so may be that helps :)

by tegels 1 year agoAs writers, we're also voracious readers, so why not take the short historical fiction reader survey being run by the University of Manchester?: http://meetthereaders.blogspot.com/2010/09/calling-all-readers-of-historical.html

by tegels 1 year agoJust realised there's a lot of stuff going on in the North West besides the events I listed a few days back. If you live in the North West, there's a (very) short story competition you can enter: http://www.time-to-read.co.uk/promotions/default.asp?fn=1&id=6&ps=16

by dgaughran 1 year agoHi,
Anyone willing to be a beta-reader for my historial set in early 1800s South America? -
by Bren 1 year agoPlease, please keep everything crossed for me. I spent 4 years researching and writing a historical novel about one of the Romantic poets who was a friend of S.T.Coleridge. I entered it into the BritWriters Award (which I thought was a con) and I have been notified to say it has got through the first round of judging. ) I am such a cynic I expect it is to get me to buy tickets to the award ceremony. :) Good luck with all your writing. Has anyone posted a historical on cloud yet?
