Technically not an agents response but a good story anyway.
I worked briefly as a gag writer for 118's joke texting service, and when they decided it was a stupid service I had a lot of jokes to use up so tried a few greetings card companies. Most of them never even got back to me so I called it quits. Last week I got a response, apologising for how long it had taken and inviting me to send some stuff. Which is great and I'm certainly not complaining. However I checked the date on my orginal email to which they were replying; I sent it in February... 2009.

I think people who get advances before they finish are usually quite successful already. I'm not sure it happens with your debut. I don't know if there are hard and fast rules on approaching agents with something unfinished but they all recomend you finish first. Personally I think there's a danger that changes you make elsewhere in the book will impact on those first chapters which you will have to send out. But then I've seldom come within spitting distance of getting an agent so I could be talking crap.

welcome Jamie. If your draft is pretty much 'ready' I would consider querying agents now. make sure you've got the best possible query letter, synopsis, and that your first three chapters are polished to a fine point before you begin. But the back and forth time it takes to get an answer from agents takes SO long, I don't see a problem with starting now.

I'm currently writing the final draft of my novel. Does anyone know if it's ever permissible to contact an agent before your work is completely finished, so long as you have a synopsis etc.? I've heard about people being given advances before they finish things up, but the prospect of approaching someone before intimidates me!
