A tale of two weddings.

This weekend sees the start of a hectic period in the Mcallan Mansion.  One of my bestest mates runs a pub nearby (free beer has been known!)  His daughter is getting married on Saturday and the service and reception will naturally be at the pub and in a marquee.

Now for some reason the lovely bride to be has decided on a medieval theme for the occasion.  Now, our particular band of friends has never been shy when it c0mes to dressing up; either for themed murder mystery nights, Burns Nights, or just for the hell of it!  So when this was announced sewing were brought out from attics or from under stairs, charity shops were raided for suitable curtain material and frantic creative activity took place.  Not from me I hasten to add ... I have just grown a beard and bought a sword 'cos I'm going as a Knight Hospitaller!   Not just me either, my eldest son, his brother and partner are all going simalarily kitted out.

Mrs Mac has been very busy and created some pretty authentic costumes for these errant knights from Jerusalem and also made two superb medieval dresses for herself and eldest son's fiance....they look absolutely amazing.  Everyone else has been busy too ....my best mate's wife has even made him some leather curlyish toed shoes for his minstrel outfit!  (bet he wishes he was going as Knight though!)

Then the following weekend eldest son and fiance get married!!  This will be a much more traditional affair ... although this dressing up bug has still bitten ... my two sons and I are wearing Northumberland tartan kilts!

There will be pics galore no doubt so watch this apace.

ps...Mrs Mac insists the beard has to come off for the second wedding.  Which is a shame 'cos I'm getting quite attached to it!

Of course you can all come!....dressing up is obligatory though! I'm not sure if all of the guests will be dressing up medieval style though ... some folks don't feel comfortable making a fool of themselves.
Jousting?...now there's an idea. They don't have horses at the pub but they do have three alpacas!

Aww, that all sounds like so much fun! I actually wanted a medieval wedding, but Mr Ely isn't the type to dress up (for his long hair and rock-star looks, he is quite conservative about such things), so I had to satisfy the urge by designing my own wedding dress instead - unsurprisingly, it was a medieval / Tolkien-ish affair.

And Mrs Mac - no fair! Why can't Mac-Daddy keep his beard?!

Don't go out in the sun this week Mac- you'll have a two toned face for son's wedding otherwise!

I note that the top of your head is in a similar state to my own. I had a beard about 4 or 5 years ago. I shaved it off when I tired of my women folk constantly debating how they could take my head off and put it on the other way up.

Well, I have learned something - I didn't realise that kilts were also worn south of the border and that there's a special tartan for Northumberland. I would have thought the beard would look rather fetching with a kilt. But if you're forced to shave it off, maybe you can make a sporran out of it???

Lady F-B insisted on hosting wedding reception at Bongwater Towers for one of innumerable nephews or nieces (can't remember which offhand - could never keep track, vast hordes of the blighters). Weddings unspeakable ordeals at best of times, but ghastly relative was to be tying the proverbial knot with some Caledonian article, therefore proceedings were to have Scottish theme. Despite certainty of dire retribution from the memsahib, self firmly refused to wear kilt - dash it all, but one has to draw the line somewhere, what? Was thoroughly vindicated on the night, hideous debacle ensued due to unfortunate escape of groundskeeper's ferrets - have never laughed so much before or since; needless to say, Lady F-B has never forgiven, yrs truly remains under suspicion over timely release of aforementioned mustelidae even unto the present day.

What a shame there wasn't a pic of you and your beard to accompany the blog ; ) I do enjoy a bit of dressing up, I've always fancied dressing up as a damsel in distress and waiting for my knight in shining armour..................sadly the nearest I've come to that is breaking down on the road and being rescued by a bloke on a moped : ( Enjoy all your festivities and can't wait to see the pics!

Elly ...Mrs Mac says it scratches her too much!
Alan, I get similar comments..though to be fair this time the beard is a goatee accompanied by lots of stubble ...I'm going for the unkempt look!
SS .... now I hate to drag up a history lesson (hee hee) but the Northumbrian tartan outdates all those worn in Scotland which are just Victorian creations. They did wear plaids of course but they tended to be of one colour. The Northumbrian tartan is simply tiny black and white check.
Monty ...I do sympathise with your predicament old bean... terrible sights are to be seen during 'Strip The Willow'...too much flinging up of kilted legs!

aw c'mon Mac - you must have a web cam to put a pic up here???

Your friends certainly picked a great weekend weather-wise, and the snow isn't here for 3 weeks so hopefully your son's wedding won't be too breezy for those lovely kilts! Now here's a question for you - do Northumbrian men do the traditional under-kilt thing with regards to undies - or lack thereof?

Happy days ahead. Look forward to your wedding pics.
