Anime has a way to stand firmling with ideas rather then how commercial the idea can be. NGE is pretty much a mix of ideas and commercial, huge awseome robots make great toys, but then under tha layers of complex characters the show was about ideas of the human condition being a doubled edged sword forecer entwined to bring us pain and joy....pain is what makes the whole idea of being real and real--a life filled with ease isn't a life, NGE basically spoke to me on levels of how existences needs suffering to mean anything.

Elfen Lied, did the same thing about questioning the human condition when presented with something new in the area of human evolution--dark, gore and horror filled, the series got a point across on if resentment towards others is based on the person itself or the general overview of an entire spectrom.
