Debi Does Dulwich

Published by: Tony on 10th Dec 2011 | View all blogs by Tony
Such fun meeting up with Debi again this afternoon at the Fox in S London where she was leading a workshop for the East Dulwich Writers' Group.

The Group has produced not one, but two anthologies of their own short stories all thououghly edited and illustrated by themselves - a tallented group. This is born out by the fact that their first volume came second in a national anthology comp, only to be surpassed by their next volume which came first!

The group's other claim to fame is that it inspired Debi to start writing about a decade or so ago - and as we all know she has never looked back.

It was good to see Whisks there, too, floating in from te Cloud and to meet Debi's other half and a crowd of other lovely folk from the writers' group. Maybe we'll see a few of them looking in here soon (Come on in East Dulwich; the writing's lovely!).

Needless to say everyone agreed that Debi gave us plenty of food for thought. A great workshop, and it was free! Thanks Debi and all my other new friends. We must do it again.

Ah, that's lovely, Tony. Thanks so much. Now you know why I say there's nothing like a really good writing group. I owe everything to them.

But what I'm really excited about is the news that Whisks has been inspired to continue the story she began. That's the sign of a real writer, one whose antennae are tuned to twitch at the least opportunity. Lovely to think that could come out of a small session like this one. Imagine: if everyone took away something, what a wonderful way for ME to spend an hour of my life.

Smashing to meet you too again, Tony, what a pleasant afternoon; I'm so glad I made it. You may live to regret suggesting 'Anita' for the name of the heroine in our made-up story. I now have serious plans for her.
And Debi? Thanks lovely. I didn't know your hubby was there?!?!? Although now Tony mentions it, the chappie sitting next to me did look vaguely familiar. Was that your alter ego who gave me his car keys? Anyone not understanding this? - jolly bad luck. Tee Hee. :)

Yes! You met him last year at the dreaded awards that we don't talk about. He remembers you. Not often a 6'4" beanpole slips through people's memory. :-) My gorgeous god daughter was also there.

Oh, and that's CAR keys, people, not room keys. It wasn't that sort of class ... You had to be there ...

Your god daughter, Debi? Which one was she?

Yes, yes, I knew I'd met him before - but what with hurrying in at the last minute after a pleasant quarter of an hour in unscheduled traffic jams, I didn't absorb my immediate compatriots with the attention they deserved. As I say, he looked familiar. But mostly what I saw was the back of his head. Apart from when I gave him my phone and he offered his car keys.

Crossed with you, Whisks. You're being deliberately naughty here. Still, might drum up support if I do another ... though there may be some disappointed customers afterwards.

Are we allowed to say here about the exquisite tome you shared with us all?

Well I wasn't disappointed, so there's an end to it :) FAOD peeps, we had to swap pocket objects and write them into a story. The car keys proved inspirational.
As for the 'exquisite tome' Debi? Well there's nothing to say really - just my beloved scrapbook of my dear little summer bird.

The love oozes out from between the covers and holds the magic that was Woody for all time. A beautiful tribute to a very special relationship.

Thank you. I still call out, whenever I see a magpie.

Me too. Well every time a magpie comes into the garden pretending to be a bluetit and clinging pecariously to the suspended fat-ball, I think of Woody. To have had his story imortalised between the covers of a real live voume, along with all our comments and words of encouragement and despair, is a wonderful tribute to a life lived to the full, how ever briefly.

Ah yes, Debi, I thought it was probably her, but I couldn't have begun to spell her name to ask you - a lovely vivacious and animated young lady.

Aw, thank you, Tony. Yes, he did live so much in the present tense, didn't he? I'm pleased I have his book, but I'd rather have him. I still see Miss Magpie and her mother around the place - which reminds me how young Woody was when he disappeared. Miss Magpie landed on my office window sill the other day - came to have a look at me, I think. For a second, I thought she was Woody but she wasn't.

Just to let you know that I'm still whooshing! The new story's bubbling out! Thanks again, Debster!

    M'Dear Whisks,
Good news. Sooner the better; it's been too long since we've read some of your fiction. It is fiction isn't it?

Can't tell you how delighted I am that a 45 min stint in a pub has launched a new story into the world. This is what it's all about, folks. :-)

Go, Whisks, go! Fiction and non-fiction. And why am I not surprised that you found some added motivation in one of Debi's workshops? Thank you, Debi, on behalf of the Whisks fan club.

Aw John, you sweetie - thank you for that vote of confidence. Although as secretary (press-ganged) of the WFC, I can relay that Ms C Whisks will become paralysed with fears of failure before too long, if not already.
    Word Count yesterday? 3,524 (Hooray!).
Word Count today? Zero. So far.
Trouble is, I was too enthusiastic yesterday - wrote a bit too long and the last furlong is rubbish. Delete, delete, delete.

Ms CW paralysed? Fears? Of failure? Not if I have my way ... *cracks whip*

Thought for the night, Miss C Whisks - Fear of success can sabotage attainment of goals too. Beware!

Jill is absolutely right. Focus on success, not failure. As you know, deleting some of what you've written is all part of the process. In fact, it can be a good sign (you are exercising quality control) but a bad one. xx

You're both right, I know, I know. *drums fingers, sucks pencil, looks out of window*
