Haiti

I’m so frustrated at people saying they do not want to support the victims of the Haiti disaster because “Charity starts at home”. I do of course understand their point. However, there are hundreds of charities that try to raise funds for almost every problem that arises in the UK. There are charities for: the homeless, Cancer, Heart disease, Depression and Suicide, Children, Poverty…I could go on for hours! Haiti is one of the developing worlds poorest countries and the people in the country are in dire need of the things we take for granted. They have no water, food, homes and clothing. The simple things that don’t cross our minds. I have heard numerous complaints about charities who are going out of their way to help children who have been orphaned due to the earthquake say things such as “There are plenty of children here with no parents” and so on but think about it logically! Yes there are children here with no parents, i have first hand experience of that! We have a care system. The children of the western world are not left with no options! Children in Haiti are struggling to get a simple glass of water, an operation, even just a bandage for a cut! Some people may claim they don’t have the money to donate! Well then, volunteer to help at a fundraiser, organise a raffle, promote fundraisers, sell some old clothes on ebay and donate the money! There is so much people can do to help. In 2004 The Indian Ocean was hit suddenly by a Tsunami, killing over 230,000 people. I experienced the loss of someone rather close to me due to the disaster, which is perhaps why i have such a strong opinion on the Haiti Earthquake appeal. The appeal to help victims of The Indian Ocean Tsunami raised over six billion pounds sterling! So far over five hundred million pounds has been raised in aid of Haiti, lets try to exceed the total raised in 2004.

I think you need to look at where the money goes to. There only a very few organisations that I trust, and MSF medicines sans frontiers, is one of them. I know that most of the money sent to the Tsunami was siphoned off by corrupt officials. Most of the worthwhile work was done quietly in the background with no publicity by volunteer organisations. I would never never give money to general appeals. You might as will put it down the toilet.
