I don't wish to alarm you all but........

Now then folks. Here in Mcallan Mansions it is a tradition that the master of the house (that's me...shhhh...don't tell Mrs Mac!) has to read old Charlies 'A Christmas Carol'.

If I don't get it read by Christmas Eve, then Christmas just wont happen.  Now, I'm not talking about my own family Christmas; I'm talking about everyone's feckin' Christmas!

That's right...if I don't get the thing finished, then the whole thing is off!  Turkey/goose, pigs in blankets, mince pies (yuk)...they will all vanish...AND...no pressies for anyone!

Normally I have it done and dusted by now....but this year, what with one thing and another, I haven't even started it yet!  The main reason being that I lost my well thumbed copy in the house move! (maybe the removal men nicked it!)

Ok....I hear you say it's only a hundred pages or so...but it's not that simple.  I have to read it at home by the fire with a glass or two of malt, reading it at work in quiter moments just doesn't count.  So, you holler, there are still plenty of evenings left...but there aren't!  It's festive pub quiz tomorrow and party the night after...then it's Christmas Eve!

*Mac scurries off to read....and pour more whisky!*

Why don't you record yourself reading it this year, then next year, you can listen to it driving, walking, in the shop - it won't be so much of a rush!

I hope you read it in time because I was expecting it to be Christmas Day on Sunday! I would hate to have to postpone it!

    Focus man, focus.

I'm sure you'll come up trumps, maybe on Saturday night.
    I've every confidence in you.

What a great idea! I read it again a few years ago after a long hiatus, and couldn't believe how well written and constructed it was - generally I find a lot of Dickens woolly and over-written. Xmas Carol is a little gem and deserves its place in posterity.

'A Christmas Carol' is a criticism of the utilitarian philosophies of the time. Sir ALan Sugar is the modern Scrooge. We are all suffering from an excess of this philosophy now, let alone other current manifestations of the period, What about 3% consols - the government loans of a slightly earlier time. These loans were raised to pay for an unpopular war and a profligate monarch - George 1v. There was little income tax at the time. Money was raised by taxes on goods which everybody bought, Only the aristocracy could afford to loan money to the government and they bought the consols. The rest of the population paid the interest on these loans. Thus there was an upward migration of capital. Sounds familiar. I am off to work now and you can be thankful you did not get my thoughts on the Victorian period and racism - for a previous blog. All the best for the New Year and spend spend spend out of a recession so do your best over Christmas. So we have been told!

Mac, geddonwithit! And if you can't find your own copy (which I can quite see must be a horrid feeling), to paraphrase Scrooge himself - are there no bookshops?

Ok...ok.....don't panic. Mrs Mac found me a copy in a second hand book shop. I'm halfway through...but....it's not my original copy....so I'm not sure if it counts! I'll just have to drink more malt to compensate..:)
Barb...I have watched the movie already...but that doesn't count!
Minxie...recording it also breaches the very complicated 'Christmas won't happen rules'...but good idea!
I agree Aonghus, it is a very well crafted book, and also crammed full of political comment amongst the seasonal cheer.
Hope you found your copy Geri!
Promise to read the rest tonight before pub quiz...that's if the malt holds out...oh no!..another crisis!

The strange thing is that the same rule applies down here chez moi. Now then, I wonder if in Boolean terms Christmas is determined by an AND or an OR. Heaven forfend it's an XOR.

When Santa bought me a Kindle last year the first thing my daughter did was to slap into it a copy of the master work, available for the princely sum of nothing at all.

Ali...that still breaks the very strict rules!..but ta anyway!
Alan...rumour has it that Santa is bringing a Kindle down our chimney this year...so the problem should be resolved!

Oh there's always someone who has to ruin it for everyone else ;p

That's a good tradition...hey could we not all split it??

Happy reading - and drinking :)

*Wipes brow*...phew...ok...panic over everyone....it's done with minutes to spare before I was dragged off to the quiz (which we didn't win boo hiss!)
Christmas can now go ahead as scheduled. I've already been in touch with Santa and he was getting a bit worried I can tell you and one or two of the elves were having stress issues. Rudolph was calm as always and was having his nose polished. I've given Santa the best route as usual, and he tells me that he has pressies for everyone!
    Merry Chritmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas..:)
