I wonder, therefore I am - more food for thought

We’re all getting old and I used to think ‘food, glorious food, and lots of food.’ But now it’s more like food, tasteless food, cheap and tasteless food.

I wonder how many of you have thought about the food you eat? How a plump chicken from your supermarket has such a good look and no taste? How disappointing it is to spend all that time in your kitchen and then eat a chicken that is just filling but no more than that apart from the flavourings you put in to your gravy.

I was in Hong Kong and had a bad time with Virgin Atlantic foods (expected), but when I was in Hong Kong, I had a great time tasting how a simple boiled chicken ought to taste. I thought it was due to a different species of chicken, but a well informed friend of mine said it was due to the time the birds lived. He said any chicken that have not lived more than 6 months aren’t worth tasting and I thought the chickens we get in supermarkets are indeed intensively reared and they are slaughtered ten weeks after hatching.

I also thought of the sirloins I cook, where is the taste gone? I remember it used to be very nice when I was a young lad but nowadays, it is a bit like a lottery; sometimes it is good but more often it is bland. How can this be so? Is it because I’m getting on a bit that my taste buds fail me, I wonder?

Another thing I wonder, (there’re so many things I wonder- it’s what makes one tick) is have you seen on the supermarket shelves, how lean are the pork chops? I remember pork chops come (or use to come) with half an inch of fat but nowadays, it’s really lean, just skin and the meat. Do the farmers have a strict exercise regime for their pigs and make them fit before they are slaughtered? Or are they genetically modified pigs bred to be lean, just like those super muscular cows I saw on TV and they looked like these body builders on a diet of anabolic steroids. Or worse still, could it be that these pigs are fed a chemical in their feed to keep them lean?

I think we are all a bit paranoid about our foods; we let people say to us that having an egg every day is bad for you for donkey’s years and then recently I heard that there was no truth in that.  We hear that fat is bad but then eating a sausage without any fat in it, is not enjoyable.

Are you sure there is nothing wrong with your memory? I don't mean that in a rude way. But we do tend to remember things being bigger and better when we were kids. Does it not come down to the way it is cooked? I take your point about the age of chickens, but you mention that in Hong Kong you ate boiled chicken. Boiled chicken is tastier and softer than roast chicken. That's how you get good for you Jewish chicken soup.

Have you tried the butcher or corn feed chicken? What about going vegie for a while and giving the taste buds a rest and then coming back. If you're buying meat from the supermarket, I'm not surprised you're disappointed.
Fat is fine - sugar is the problem.

I don't know if it's just me, but the quality of meat seems much better here in Germany. There are more local butchers and people aren't as squeamish about seeing meat chopped up to order rather than pre-packed in shrink-wrap and similar. I don't eat a huge amount of meat, but when I do, it's got to be good - and I like knowing where it came from, too.

We've recently got more fussy about meat. We eat less of it than we used to (helped I suppose by the fact that both our daughters are now vegetarians) and are a lot more aware of where it comes from, using a local butcher who can tell you exactly that. The meat is more expensive but it's loads better. Every so often I go the lazy route and get meat in the supermarket but always regret it because you can taste the difference, not to mention the conscience question. It all comes down to price, mass-production, etc. If we expect cheap products, that's what we'll get, in every sense of the word. And cheap meat probably isn't very good for you anyway. My husband always feel ill if he has chicken that isn't free range.

I didn't mean meat in particular, but there is sugar in most things, including cheap sausages and hams.

Just reading through the comments here. I was blown away by the amount of processed and prepared foods available here in the UK..... There are so few butchers... Every where I look there are warnings about salt content... stuff the salt, what about the damn sugar... the amount of sugar in stuff in this country is scary - really. The UK has many, many positives, but also some negatives... I just hope that they don't follow the USA too much with the fast food shit....

Sadly, when buying fresh foods and making meals from scratch it's more expensive... but in order to have a healthy lifestyle and body... I'll pay the extra... Having good chicken depends on two things, where you get it from and how you cook it.

Not to mention the polyphosphates to water saturate the meat, therfore making it heavier. We are getting a raw deal in this country.

Which are salts. No wonder we all feel like crap all the time.

Yeah - problem is that sooo many people in this country are just accepting it... and there is also so much waste of good food, too. People really don't know what it's like to not have any food or starve.... What is thrown away here in this country, could feed so many else where.

There's just far too much plastic / fast food available and people willingly lap it up. They don't realize the damage they doing to themselves... good fresh food helps make and keep one stronger in mind, body and soul... keeping our bodies healthy to fight off germs and infections...

I also know that some don't have the time when getting home from work, but they really need to try and make the time to cook meals... it's in there best interest at the end of the day... and once in the routine, they won't notice the time taken...

Okay enough bitching from me... :0)

Talking of waste food, I saw a program about this funny food shop in Taiwan that sells exclusively left over food! I am not making this up! There was another crazy shop that has a toilet theme where everything like the seats and tables look like toilet seats and they even eat out of bowls that look likt toliet seats. Nice eh?
