Published by: dgaughran on 20th Jul 2011 | View all blogs by dgaughran
It's been a very hard slog, including working well past sunrise the last couple of weeks, but my new book has been released.

Let's Get Digital: How To Self-Publish, And Why You Should is available from Amazon UK for the special launch price of £1.71. But best of all, it's also available as a free PDF download on my blog, which you can share with anyone you choose.

Today is a very exciting day, the book is racing up the charts in the US and the UK, and I have already picked up some excellent reviews.

The cover and blurb are below.

You won’t make any money from self-publishing.

MYTH!

The internet has revolutionized every business it has come into contact with, and publishing is no different.

For the first time, these changes are handing power back to the writer. It’s up to YOU if you want to profit from them.

Let’s Get Digital: How To Self-Publish, And Why You Should.

This guide contains over 60,000 words of essays, articles, and how-to guides, as well as contributions from 33 bestselling indie authors including J Carson Black, Bob Mayer, Victorine Lieske, Mark Edwards, and many more.

It covers everything from how the disruptive power of the internet has changed the publishing business forever to the opportunities this has created for writers. It gives you practical advice on editing, cover design, formatting, and pricing. And it reveals marketing tips from blogging and social networking right through to competitions, discounts, reviews, and giveaways.

If you are considering self-publishing, if you need to breathe life into your flagging sales, or if you want to understand why it’s a great time to be a writer, Let’s Get Digital: How To Self-Publish, And Why You Should will explain it all.

    I wish you the best of luck with it. You deserve to do well after all the hard work you have put into it. Your regular blogs have also helped a number of people who must have been following your journey in self publishing. Tell us when you are having the celebration party and I'll bring a bottle.

    Thanks guys.

    @Prop

    You may joke, but I may in fact do a print version!

    I'm toying with two ideas - a print version of this, or writing a follow up, shorter title on PoD, and then combining both into a print version.

    Essentially, it will depend on demand. There is a bit more cost with a print version, and I am not 100% sure how much of the target market haven't made the switch to e-books yet.

    Well, I've bought it, David, but did think after I'd done so that that it might have been nice as a 'proper' book that I could take to bed with me and then absorb the contents while I sleep. Still. that could just be the effects of all this morning's Merlot :>)

    Up to #5 in one Amazon list. Nice going. More power to your elbow.

    Dave,

    I do jest. often too much. A character flaw..... I tend to mock or make sport of things I do not understand which is alot.

    One of the aspects of self publishing I fear is marketing...... But I don't want to give away 60% of any sales for it.

    Does your work cover that in detail?

    I am in contact with two small pubs and I am thinking of pulling back until I have an agent. I am also thinking of self publishng as well....

    the writing is actually the easy fun bit......
    Can your book convince me?

    @trafalgar

    Thanks. It's sliding back a little in the UK, but surging in the US which is fantastic.

    @Prop

    I think it will convince you one way or the other.

    I try to give a realistic picture of what self-publishing is like. It's a very hard slog. And it can be hard doing everything yourself, and not having an agent or editor to bounce ideas off. And a lot of time you are shooting in the dark.

    Getting your book noticed is the big challenge we all face, and it can be disheartening when no-one is buying your book.

    On the other hand, your success or failure is squarely at your door, and there is a whole community of people that are exceptionally generous with their time that are willing to help.

    The rewards are fantastic. I'm not talking about royalties here, there are lots of other benefits. It really brings you in touch with your readers. And, having control over every aspect of how your book is presented from cover through to price is immensely satisfying.

    If you are on the fence, download the free PDF, and see if it is your cup of tea.

    You may well read the book and decide self-publishing is not for you.

    Or you may decide otherwise.

    Dave

    P.S. Don't forget that whichever path you choose, you are not locked down to that forever. You may decide to go for a trade deal in the end. But that doesn't stop you from self-publishing other stuff in the future, or vice versa. Back in March, I couldn't decide either. I only broke the impasse by deciding to test the waters with a short story.

    I just realized I didn't answer your question.

    There is a lot in the book on marketing from blogging, social networking, competitions, discounts, and blog tours etc. etc.

    However, one point I make again and again is that writing MUST always come first. You can't be distracted by promotion. In any event, the greatest promotional tool any writer has is new work. There is no promo trick out there that beats a new release.

    Cheers for the response Dave,

    I am a bit of a recluse when it comes to publicity and a technical neanderthal with regards to social networking but it might be worth a go.

    i wiil read and give you a novice's point of view on it.
