Not a blog really - has anyone read this book please?

I have just read a book today - a very small book with a content that is huge. Mind boggling really. And I would be very happy to share thoughts with anyone else on the cloud who has read it, over a cup of theoretical tea or even for a change a theoretical lunch.

TITLE - THE VICTORIAN CHAISE LONGUE
AUTHOR- MARGHANITA LASKI
DATE -  published 1953  though Persephone published it in 1999

I will put the kettle on while I am waiting....

Sorry, haven't read the book, but it was nice to be reminded of Marghanita Laski after all these years. I used to hear her as a pannelist in radio shows back in the 50s and 60s. I think, probably "What's My Line" and certainly "My Word" the litterary quiz with Frank Muir and Denis Norden. She had an enormouss knowledge of the written word and a very sharp mind, as I recall. I expect her books could well have been 'mind boggling', as you say.

Thanks Tony, nice to hear from you. Your tea is over there. The blurb on the Persephone book says she was a frequent panelist, and I only read that a couple of hours ago - how interesting that you mention that now.... Maybe we are not only on the same cloud, but same planet too.....!!!

Actually her style is so interesting I am tempted to look into her other works, and maybe buy a few more. I only have 'The Village' of hers apart from the chaise longue. I should get a bigger house to house my bigger library....

I haven't read the novel, mockingbird, but I have read (and enjoyed) 'The Village'. I am a huuuuuge fan of Persephone Books and am slowly working my way through the list. It contains so many treats and so many authors for me to discover for the first time. Have you read 'The Priory' by Dorothy Whipple? And 'Miss Buncle's Book' by DL Stephenson? They are very different reads but both wonderful in their own way.

But none of that helps you with your original question. Sorry!

Hi Spangles - yes, love Persephone, I have about half of the collection in my library. My sister in law is right, I need the house next door for my ultimate library! Absolutely loved The Priory, very moved by it, and thoroughly enjoyed Greenbanks by same author which is out by Persephone this autumn incidentally. Miss Buncle's Book was very amusing - but I dont think I will bother with the sequel. As to my original request - the pot of tea I made is getting cold waiting....,
