Postcard from New England #5 – Vermont to Cape Cod via Rhode Island. – Signing Off

Published by: Kim on 19th Oct 2010 | View all blogs by Kim

We left Vermont with three inches of snow and travelled south to Newport, Rhode Island. The town just happened to have on a seafood festival for the weekend with live music and live lobsters giving their blush-pink, barbecued all for us touring populous. With the tall ships sailing into the harbour every few minutes we classed ourselves lucky to have arrived at such a vibrant time. It was quite a spectacle.

Today we moved east onto Cape Cod for the last of our overnight stays before returning home on tomorrow.

What a journey we have had. Weather ranging from freezing fog with zero visibility and ‘snow- feathers’, to seventy degrees and clear blue skies; vibrant cities to quaint fishing villages; precipitous three-quarter-car wide roads to six-lane highways; lodgings from the most basic, colonial past to rooms future-proofed for even the most picky of hi-techers; food from quahog to buffalo.

What have we learned from this amazing New England road trip?

1.     Next time bring the navy jacket, not the coffee one – Navy goes with everything.

2.     Be ready for the weather to turn at the drop of a hat.

3.     Be prepared to ‘have a good day’ whether you want one or not.

4.     You may turn right on a red light, if it is safe to do so. (Thanks to all the ‘Honkers’ who reminded us of this fact.)

5.     You should give serious consideration to voting “Chip Conquest” for State Senate – Oh come on, he has to be a superhero at the very least with a name like that!

And last but by no means least....

6.     “Always brake for moose – It could save your life.”

We hope that you have enjoyed taking this journey along with us and we thank you for travelling with ‘Clarissa and Henry’ tours.

Catch you next year.

Love.

Hi Kim, I've enjoyed your postcards, but I'm only on the Cloud now and again at present - will go back and read the ones I've missed - prob tomorrow, now (it's late in England). Thanks for sending them - feels like such an adventure and we're living vicariously through you. Can I come next time? Safe journey to the next stop - or is that home? And what on earth is quahog?

Hi Kim, loved your postcards. I have always wanted to travel across America so I have been reading (and laughing) with interest. I'm glad you have enjoyed yourselves; what a trip! :)

Thank you Whisks and Kiki. I'm so glad that you enjoyed our journey too.

In answer to your question Whisks, a quahog is a clam, removed from it shell and minced with breadcrumbs, herbs and cheese, re-placed in it's shell and baked. It's a little like a mini Coquille St. Jacques and is usually accompanied by a steaming bowl of Clam Chowder on the side. Yum! The seafood was to die for. :-)
