Sealing Wax

There comes a time for every man to sit back and reflect
On this and that, and sealing wax, and what commands respect.
At 65 that time has come – it doesn’t take a miracle –
To guess, inspired by Minxie’s verse, I’d soon be waxing lyrical.
If anything I’ve fathomed over six decades and a half
It’s not to be too serious, be sure to have a laugh.
Here’s hoping when you, too, retire at (what is it?) 68?
The pension funds have not run dry, and you can prosper on the State!

Or, as a friend said to me not so long ago (and I pinched for my book. 'You're old. Are you 'tired yet?'

Many happy returns, Tony. Is this your retirement too or did you hang up your working hat earlier?

    Whatever, have a wonderful day.

Nice one Tony — the Cloud's Poet Laureate

John, I'm reminded of the tough (but true) observation: When young people get tired, they look tired. When old people get tired, they look older.

It's not fair is it. At our age our face takes all day to regain some semblance of normality...and by the time it does it's time to go back to bed again!

Saw Scorsese's 'Hugo' this evening, Minxie - some amazing 3D effects. Thanks again, one and all; it's been a good day.

Tony was a turtle, delicately bred,
Who thought of others' wishes and as he ate them said:
'If I seem a little grumpy, it's not that you are lumpy.'
For Tony was a turtle, delicately bred.

A verse mis-remembered from - oh golly, can't remember the chap's name either. It's not Hilaire Belloc anyway. The other one.

Ha ha. *burps delicately* I haven't seen that. It's not Lewis Carol, I suppose? My 'sealing wax' was a homage to him. But he went in for mock turtles and I'm assumimng we're talking the real Macoy here?

Nooo, not Lewis Carroll. It's from quite a long poem called 'Tony the Turtle'. We had to learn a poem off by heart in the second year at secondary school; I shunned the Shakespeare sonnets and the Larkin, and chose this one. I haven't got it quite right, I know, but ... oh hang on! Here it comes!
Tony was a Turtle who thought before he fed
Of other people's wishes, and as he ate them said
... and so on - the rest is correct.
It's by Rene someone - French, I think.
*Grumble* I'm going to have to look it up now.

Gah! Can't find it. Might be Rene Villarmod, Villarault - not those, but something awkward like that. When I google it, I get pages and pages of how to feed turtles. He was in a book of nonsense verse along with the likes of Edward Lear.
Other bits of it are crawling back to me. There's another verse that goes something like:
Tony was a Turtle, sensitive to praise.
    Anxious and obliging, da-de-da-de-da.
    xxxxxx
For Tony was a Turtle with most engaging ways.
I shall go to sleep now and try to dream it up.

You got me looking now! It must be something of an achievement to know something that Google doesn't - not a trace. I did find this, though, which is quite amusing:

I'm afraid curiosity got the better of me too - love solving mysteries, but only came up with the same as you, Tony. Cute though!

    I tried Ask Jeeves, but also drew a blank. I looked in all our poetry anthologies of comic/light verse and couldn't find it. But I found this, which I like;

    The louse
    Has very little 'nous'.
    Its only pursuit
    Is the hirsute.

Tony, more fragments came to me as I slept last night - the missing line in the above, was 'To hint that he was snappy, made him thoroughly unhappy' and I feel that the author's name is now something like 'Andre Guillemot'. However, nothing useful comes up on Google except his facebook account (nooo) and a French revolutionary.
It's bugging me now, so I've started a thread to hunt him out, under Coffee Break, with all the clues I can muster.
I like your little snappytune, but it's not *my* Tony.
Jill - any help gratefully received!
Spangles, thanks for looking - like the louse!

I wonder if you got the species right, Whisks? Turtles are normally vegetarian, not carnivorous - so it isn't more likely to be 'Tony the Tiger' or some such? I googled it myself without success.

Looked in Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase & Fable - no luck there either.

Aonghus, I don't think the verse is zoologically correct in any aspect.
See my shiny new thread for more clues. :)

    TONY THE TURTLE

    Tony was a Turtle,
    Very much at ease,
    Swimming in the sunshine
    Through the summer seas,
    And feeding on the fishes
    Irrespective of their wishes,
With a "By your leave" and "Thank you"
    And a gentlemanly squeeze.

    Tony was a Turtle
    Who loved a civil phrase:
    Anxious and obliging,
    Sensitive to praise.
And to hint that he was snappy
    Made him thoroughly unhappy;
    For Tony was a Turtle
    With most engaging ways.

    Tony was a Turtle
    Who thought, before he fed,
    of other people's comfort,
And as he ate them said:
"If I seem a little grumpy,
It is not that you are lumpy."
    For Tony was a Turtle
    Delicately bred.

THAT's BLOODY IT! Well done Aonghus! Now for the top banana prize, we need the author ...

Aonghus has tracked it down to a song by Ernest Austen but says the author is unknown. Armed with that snippet, I've found that the poet was E.V. Rieu. YES! That's IT. I know it was something awkward to say. And sounded French. I bet there were more verses originally though.
    Well done Aonghus!

    Tony was a ‘turtle’
    Anxious to comply
    With Whisk’s demand for extra
    Verses by and by.
    “I would not leave you stranded;
    Here’s my off’ring, single-handed.”
    For Tony was a ‘turtle’
    And a gentlemanly guy.

    Tony was a ‘turtle’
    Admiring Aonghus’ quest
    Triumphantly revealing
    What eluded all the rest.
“How splendid that you found it.
With your leave, I’ll now expound it.”
    For Tony was a ‘turtle’
Glad to get it off his chest:

    Tony was a ‘turtle’
    Known for rhyming too;
    Composing little poems and
    Verses – quite a few.
    “I trust you’ll be forgiving -
A guy has to earn a living.”
    For Tony was a ‘turtle’
    Also known as E.V. Rieu.

Wonderful, Tony! Thoroughly enjoyed this blog and of course your own verse did E.V Rieu full justice. Glad you had a thumping good birthday and wish you many more of the same.

I think it was Aongus who traced an old memory for me to Christopher Fry when I had the name of the Saint wrong and no idea who the author was. Well done Aonghus.
