Self Publishing - using Lulu.com

Published by: MarcusArt on 24th Mar 2009 | View all blogs by MarcusArt

I've used Lulu.com for an illustrated short story. Why? I had a short story that I illustrated and fancied giving it a go. I know that short stories are almost impossible to get published so I thought this was a good way of doing it.

Here's the link the my book:
Cost Effective by Marcus Pullen (Book) in Science Fiction & Fantasy

I've ordered some for my own distribution purposes and the print quality is good. I have a a few things to feedback regarding using Lulu in particular but also with self publication in general.

- Your Own Editoral Process
- Promotion
- Sales
- Distribution
However, before I cover these points, I'd like to here from a few of you to find out who else has self published. I'll then come back to these points.

If you have others that you wish to discuss, simply add them to your feedback.

I'll be back soon.

... Posting this here as I can't seem to use the post system at the moment:

I spent a lot of time looking at different author's work and different formats, also Publishing house styles and decided on the format you see.

I have 4 books published with Lulu and I have enjoyed the process. I have always felt in control of what I wanted to write and not dictated to by a trad publisher, whether it was the need to specify a target audience or having the length cut by up to 50% (because it won't sell). Having never really been interested in selling in huge quantities, I felt self-publshing suited me and Lulu is good and cheap.
I had my first book (Arima, not Lulu) professionally proof-read and edited and what I learnt from that process I used in my Lulu books. I now feel capable enough to self-edit.

I uploaded my 80,000 words from 'Word' into their basic pdf format and ordered a copy. Everyone should do this and get to see what the reader sees - best way to edit going - all errors leap out - cheaper than a pro critique!

What I am interested to hear is - I did mine and got quite a thin book with a lot of fine print. Inspiration turned me to look at John le Carre's latest - 340 pp - written in 14 point font. I changed mine online and it looked much better - however the price was now too high for the market. Did you find this or did you just accept the first fine print thin volume? LS
