The magical world of Narnia

My daughter  (24) and I took ourselves off to the cinema yesterday afternoon to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  Having been a fan of the Narnia stories since I was 8 years old I have only recently caught up with the film versions.  It's a long time since I actually read the books so I didn't find myself criticising the films for missing bits out or altering stuff and regardless of what anyone else says - I really enjoyed the film.  I love a bit of magic and good triumphing over evil - don't you?  Eustace Scrubb was wonderfully pompous until the scales fell from his eyes - literally!

The  point of my blog is  not to keep you up to date with my social calender, which would make you yawn but this - C.S. Lewis was an Oxford scholar and  I was surprised to learn that his publisher and some friends tried to dissuade him from writing childrens books - telling him there were 'too many things that clashed  - a Father Christmas and an evil witch, talking animals and children.'   He obviously didn't listen to them!  I will be re-visiting the works of C.S. Lewis, when I have time and my NY resolution will be to have the courage of my own convictions when it comes to writing - I may not be a C.S. Lewis or  an Oxford scholar but I will never say never and will keep working at my writing and look for opportunities.  After all, we should all believe in a little bit of magic!

Happy New Year to all on the The Cloud.

I read the Narnia books when I was very young, and the one that sticks in my mind is the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The only thing I didn't like about it was Reepicheep - I found him really irritating. I didn't come across many fantasy books as a child, for some reason. I guess most of the books I got to read were my dad's, and they were mostly SciFi. After CS Lewis, the next fantasy series I remember reading was Alan Garner's books, eg 'the Moon of Gomrath'.
Funny how when most people talk about Fantasy, they tend to use Tolkien as a baseline. I didn't read LOTR until I was 15; I totally got into it. I had just recently discovered d*pe, and would have a spiffle before settling down with the book.
I don't read all that much Fantasy, more Horror and SciFi ( though I've been reading a lot of historical stuff lately, pertickly enjoyed Robert Harris's Roman books), but recently read Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' books, great stuff!

Aha Mr Wrathers - I have to admit a rather liked Reepicheep, the irrepressible mouse - to me, he is the one who shows you don't need to be a physical giant of a person to be courageous! The only book of Alan Garner's I read was The Wierdstone of Brisingamen, which I loved and read several times! LOTR I have read several times - each time I find someething I hadn't noticed before. Haven't tried Philip Pullman's books but I have heard good things about them so will add them to my list!

The Narnia Chronicles were not published in time for me to enjoy as a child, but I love the magic of them now. We all need a little magic in our lives, don't we? Especially the lovely Karen who has been doing ... what? Filling Vat returns on New Year's Eve?! :-(

Happy New Year to you and yours Karen. May 2011 be a year filled with magical experience and bring fulfilment of all your dreams.
