What I am doing in the real world, yes, I do have a job!

In the real world, I am inching toward débuting my first childrens clothing collection at a large trade fair, at the Business Design centre, Islington.

The world of clothing being pretty much the same no matter whom it’s aimed at; I am preparing for a photo shoot this weekend, which means getting a sample collection made up and sent to me in time.

I’m not going to go into the long winded and nearly year long process it has been to find manufactures who will work with me, as I am a small (read poor) business at the moment; but yesterday I had a delivery from a company who produce organic cotton clothes, and my England contact had arranged to come over with the silk bridesmaid outfits, produced in India by her fair trade factory.

On opening the cotton box, I discovered that, although 2/3 rds of the pieces were perfect, the rest had all been made in the wrong fabrics and colours. Hmmm.

Then Lucy arrived with the silk dresses, and we discovered that every one of them had been made with a part on backwards, despite the fact that I had already approved a sample which was accurate, and which they had for reference.

To add indult to injury, Lucy’s 2-year-old daughter did a wee on my rug.

Such is life.

Today, I will be sewing on labels, and trying to re-make one of the silk dresses so it might be ok in a photo. And my number one model has chicken pox.

Bet Richard Branson never had to deal with people peeing on his rug!

Sounds like a good plot for a sit-com. Hope you show goes well and appertaining to your final sentence I'd bet RB has been to music biz parties where that was de rigueur !!

I used to work in the fashion business, it sounds very much par for the course. Keep your head above water, keep smiling and you'll get through in one piece. Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll be a smash.

There's a lot can be done post shoot with photoshop. So provided your photographer is up to snuff I'm sure it will all look fine. And you'll iron out these wrinkles in the manufacturing process. There is always some wastage, unfortunately, when you farm work out particularly when you are establishing suppliers. You just have to plan for it.

Good luck with all this. I expect to hear great things.

Oh, m'dear - I laughed and cringed with you in sympathy. As long as you can keep a sense of humour, all is not lost. Good luck with it all - let us know how it goes - the trials of an entrepreneur, eh?

I heard a story once that the famous Branson cardigan was upchucked on by a baby at a photoshoot. It's probably not true, but it makes one smile.

Not sure either Alan, but I heard that the cardigan once threw up on a baby, so who knows? Thanks chaps having looked at the weather, I am now in a desperate scrabble to find a more indoor venue than was planned, am waiting for a lovely local museum to get back to me IF THE WOULD ONLY GET THEIR LOVELY BLOODY CHARITY FINGERS OUT and do so in time for me to organize everyone else...oh and I have my own charity work in the middle of the day to do now as well..

Good luck from me, too, hope it all goes smoothly on the day for you. Very funny story, at least you haven't lost your sense of humour with all the tension and anxiety that must be running through you. Must say, having had a good look at your dresses after we chatted a few weeks back, I am confident you'll get a very positive response. I love the butterfly dress in particular. Makes me wish I had a girl to put it on!

Best wishes, Tenacity. The pseudonym is good for someone just starting a new business. You're gonna need all the tenacity you can muster in today's climate.

My own view is there's never a better time to start up raw than when everyone else is struggling. It's a level playing field and you have as much chance as Richard Branson had of making it big.

Whatever you do, do well. xx
