Why is "The Avengers" so good?

I asked myself that a few days after going to see the midnight showing when I had finally calmed down. So many people are going crazy about it and calling it the greatest movie ever among other superlatives, but to me, it was an entirely average movie going experience.

This surprises me because when I was in the theatre I loved it. It's one of the most entertaining pieces of fiction I've ever seen. The writing is tight, snappy, and really well-done (Joss Whedon is definitely the real star of the film), the acting ranges from satisfactory to perfection (Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr), and the action scenes are well, mind blowing. And I think it's the fastest movie to hit the 1 billion gross and it's still climbing.

The movie seemingly does no wrong, yet I still feel like it was flat. It did everything well, but it ultimately didn't do a lot. It lacked a powerful message, but it rides high on the star power of its cast and the cultural phenomenon of comic book heroes and their movies. People not only already loved all the characters because of the comics, they loved the actors because they were already popular.

So I guess the answer to my question is that The Avengers is amazing because it fed the masses, and we love light, sweet, fun things we can sit down and stare at without thinking. How many of you saw the Avengers? And what were your thoughts about it? Leave a comment below.

Obviously a feel good movie. Feeling pretty good I haven't seen it.

No problem. I had to put my thoughts down somewhere. I feel so mixed about it. It's like a guilty pleasure. It's impressive when a work of art provokes any kind of emotion. Even if it's "just" feeling good and excited like an 11 year old, but at the same time, I know movies should strive for more.

Is this the one with Gwyneth Paltrow in a black boiler suit?

I loved it, really good movie for all the reasons above. Fast action, great effects, ok story arch, good looking actors we know and love, and really tight suits, well for some of them anyway not Thor obviously.

Aren't most Hollywood movies these days aimed at US teenagers? Okay, I'm getting old, but from Dlicorish's description, I won't be watching.
The Man City match gave me enough gut-wrenching drama to last a lifetime. Well, at least until their next match.

For the first time a movie made in America that was not about America saving the day... They had the avengers do that!

    The reasons I loved it:

    Tight plot
    Funny
    Great cast & fantastic acting
    Excellent action shots
    Interesting and different characters

But the best bit was at the end - with the hulk ... You know what I mean

My kids loved it... That says it all. It was a film for all...and for once it was worth going to the cinema for. So many times I think, should have waited for the DVD...not here. Best on the big screen!

    That's my views...

I loved this film but your blog got me thinking about why I loved it (Robert Downey Junior crush aside).

I thought like you that the writting was great, I loved the banter. Even although it was about the end of the world it was still light and funny, I loved the hulk scenes the point where he and Loki ... I will not spoilt this for those who haven't seen it ....had me spitting out my popcorn. The acting was good, not to over the top or to underplayed. it was a great balance of stars, no one seemed to steal to much of the lime light.

I don't think there is any one reason why this is a good film, it is a combination of all it's strengths that make it a winner.
