Word 10! Dear tecchies needed....

Hello everyone - just beginning to be able to peek back at cloud. Lovely to see/read you all.
I am trying to self publish and launch my barge story for my mum. She was 90 on Sunday so am in a bit of a rush.
Also off to a funeral tomorrow (my aunt, mum's younger sister) it has been an annus horribilis for our family this year! Oh no last year.
I digress.  But you can see why I am in  a rush.

I would like to be able to save the story onto a dongle as my computer is palying up but I can't see how to do it, nor how to get it onto my external hard drive. when I pressed 'save' in the good old days I was given choices which drive ie 'A' or 'C' but now it gives all kinds of formats like PDF or text etc, but how do I send it to the above?

Thank you in advance.
Still smiling at your joke Alan.

Formats and the like will depend on what package you are using. But saving onto an external drive should be straightforward. If it's a PC then there are choices looking a bit like file manager when you choose "Save As". You choose location before file name. If that's still tricky then open up the file manager after saving, locate the original file on your main drive and make a copy onto your externaldrive or dongle.

Can't help at all with the technical stuff, but want to say 'Best wishes' with your project. Your Mum will be so proud. XJ

I'd like to pass on my best wishes for getting your novel into print. I have read sections and think it's a story that's well worth being published.

As for formatting etc etc... Can't help, but I do reformat in to PDF and email work to myself as attachments to help safeguard it from getting lost. Not technically correct, but I can't get my head around all that sort of thing!

Hi Bren, good to see you back. If you have any problem following Alan's instructions I'd be happy to talk you through it on the phone. I can email you my number if you need to take me up on this.

"Save" will just save the file over itself.
What you want is "Save As" which saves it under a different name (or in a different location or both).

Thank you all for your comments, greetings and advice, all appreciated.
My twelve year old grandson came round for the day - (he finds it more peaceful here to lie around and do his homework) I put the above question to him and lo, he tapped a few keys and there was my work saved on a dongle and an external hard drive - then he said 'look at the mess your filing is in.'
Que, moi mess, there is a system? I said it is ok you don't need to worry.
His reply 'oh no, a computer has to be tidy, organised - it won't take a minute.'
He has only had a lap top since christmas!
There, he said look at that, look how free your bar is!
Me - bar? oh yes, wow - and all the book bits and writing are all in the same file, amazing. Now I don't need to trawl through the tax and other extraneous paperwork to find my novel.
    Ha ha - sad innit?
Now how did he do that....?
