Your opinion

Once again I am in need of your advice. I have my book, "The Shrouded Vampire" fully planned. It is the first in the series of five books. I want to know whether or not you think that it is a good idea to write.

Set in a small fictional town in the late 19th century William is a member of an orphanage. He finds Mina lost with amnesia in a forest and she joins him there.

When a valuable item arrives in the town and the buyer is murdered, Mina is the prime suspect. William and Mina find themselves determind to prove her innocence, but their relationship falls apart when Mina is adopted by the mayor of the town and turns a blind eye to him.

Because of this, when William solves the mystery he goes alone to confront the killer and is kiddnapped. He is imprisoned in an underground castle home to vampires.

Mina's cruelty to William costs them so much, while she does go to rescue him, her attempts fail and William becomes a vampire. The real culprit of the murders turns out to be the man that was killed. (He was a vampire) and Mina takes back the compass. The novel ends at that point. The second novel begins a month after these events.

So what are your opinions?

Okay, have you written any of the 5 books? I'm assuming that the reason you know that there are 5 books is because you have perhaps mapped out the full story and what takes place in each book? The key to a series that to possibly have a 'cliffhanger' ending, therefore allowing for the next book to take off from there and leaving the ending to the first book open. Or by leaving loose ends through out the story that need to be further explained or tired up, thus the next book.

I'd have questions like why did the man 'fake' his death and steal the 'compass'? What value has the 'compass' in this story? Was it a ploy to get to William? Why would Mina, turn her back on William, if he's been there for her and her 'rock'? Why would the Mayor of the town adopt a suspected thief? Why would William continue to try and clear her name, if she no longer needed him? Would William hate her for how she treated him? If, so how would he treat her in return and more importantly, once he's turned? Why would the vamps keep him prisoner, instead of just feeding on him or turning him?

These are just some of the questions I ask, seeing the plan of your first book.

Well the synopsis was a little brief, so here are the answers to your questions. The man (Mark) who faked his death was a vampire and his leaders want the compass as it will lead them to a place known as the vault of souls. This is a contact point where one can reach the gods, they want to destroy the contact point to stop the god's contact with the earth. They sent Mark to the town because his brother (Jim) inherited the compass from his parents. Jim sold it however, to buy his house and workshop ect. Mark was also told by his leaders not to kill any of the town members as it would arouse suspision. He therefore had to hold prisoners and forced his brother to help through the use of death threats. He does not tell his brother that he is a vampire. When Mark finds that the compass is in the town at the antique shop, he goes to buy it but while he is out, Jim goes after him and kills him. Mark has to pretend to be dead.

After Mina was adopted, she learns more and more about the mysteries surrounding her new parents. She wants to know why she was adopted. At the beggining of the novel, Mina has amniesia, this is because she has just been born into the world. Mina was one of the gods, but because of the evils in the world she made herself mortal. Mina learns this from her new parents and she is made to keep it a secret. She then finds time with William difficult, she can't face him anymore knowing what she knows and she detatches from him. When confronted, it turns into a blazing row.

Mina is the suspected theif, because she is poor and so may have stolen the compass for money. However, there was a witness, Alice Brown, who saw somebody, not Mina, kill Mark. Mina's adopted father, Mr Cloverfeild finds this girl and clears Mina's name. He adopts her for fear that Mina is in danger. He knows that she is one of the gods and so he wants to keep her safe. He also doesn't want her growing too close to people as it may cloud further hard judgments.

At first the mystery begins by clearing Mina's name, but even when her name is cleared, they try to find this mystery person. William almost gives in when Mina abandons him, but he is encouraged to continue by fellow orphans and friends, Rose and Charlie.

After William is kiddnapped, he is taken to the vampires underground castle and he learns about Mina's godly existance. When Mina arrives she explains everything too him and knowing that they may soon die, and what it must have been like for Mina to keep so much from him. William forgives her.

The vampires keep William prisoner, because he is also a reincarnated god, though he was reborn at a different time than Mina. This is because the gods did not have the power to reincarnate two gods at the same time. (I will send you the full background story of the gods so you can understand better if you wish) Therfore, the vampires wanted both of them together. They also believe that, by drinking the blood of Mina and William, the power will release them from the castle, which is their prison. The leaders were trapped there by the gods.

It is a very complex plot, too complex to write down all in one. If you want anymore information I will write more down. However, the book itself is not too complex. This information is very spread out and some is learned in later novels.

Hmmm - well that was a lot to absorb - I guess that this all is much clearer in your own mind and I can honestly not tell you where to start or how to write it, as it's your story. So if you are passionate about it and it's alive enough in your mind, then you should just start and let the story take over. I would however merely suggest that perhaps consider a stone rather or crystal, something that's more natural and earthly, considering that it's from the Gods. Also have you read the books of The Inheritance Cycle - in Brisigner - there is reference to the vault of souls, albeit dragon souls. And would these reincarnated Gods not have some form of special powers? Is it possible to turn a reincarnated God into a vamp? If the vamps are prisoners in this underground castle, how is it possible for Mark to leave? How did Mina's adoptive parents know of her being a reincarnated God? Sorry mate, just little curve balls you need to take into account. And when you start, don't give away too much information all at once or in the beginning, allow the readers to discovery it - like a journey. And try to show the readers, rather then tell them the story. Set yourself goals and tackle them one by one, not all at once or you may become overwhelming. Best of luck with your writing.

I won't answer all of the questions, but the reason that Mark can leave is because he is not an origional vampire. In the beggining of time the world was overrun by demons. They were ruled by gods until the gods created souls. When this happened, the demons rebelled and the gods became transendant. They were still close to the earth though and could still effect it. They created a new god, Osiris, who opened a portal that destroyed all of the demon kind. The leaders however survived. This is because they stole the souls that the gods created and they chose to absorb them instead of dying. This confused the magics of the portal which only swallowed demons, (souless creatures). By using more power, the gods found that they had become even further from the earth and could have very little effect at all now. When they learned that the leaders were still alive and making more of their kind they imprisoned them in their castle which was swallowed underground. However, some vampires were not in the castle at that time and therefore they dug it out and found that they could venture in and out. As for the powers of Mina and William, they do have some, only nothing magical. As I said, the gods were weak but they do find it much easier to learn. They can also become vampires, though they have more control over themselves than the average human turned vampire because of their godly existance. I hope that asnwers everything, like I say it is complex. What you have read here is not learned until the third novel. Thank once again.

Pick one scene (from your imagination or from your memory) and write it. Then post it up and ask for comments. Aim for about 500 words so it's long enough to appraise and short enough so that people can be bothered to read it. What you don't want to do is spend two years writing a novel that nobody will want. Also, you can only tell if you are a writer by writing. If writing one scene is a chore and you're glad when it's over then you are definitely not a writer. If on the other hand you really enjoy writing that one scene and you start turning off the telly or logging off facebook to go and write more then perhaps you are. Also, read widely, especially classics. God bless.
