So, two days off of work due to severe weather, that’s a bonus! I’m now trying my best to plow through the third part of the damned book!
Information
  • Are you a ...?
    Writer published in mags, etc
What genre do you primarily write in?
    Sci-fi
If you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?
    Short fiction
    Are your reading habits ...?
    Earthy
    Who is your favourite author(s)?
Kim-Stanley Robinson, Alastair Reynolds, Stephen Baxter, Wilbur Smith, Cormac McCarthy, Joseph O'Conner
And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)
The Mars Trilogy - Kim Stanley Robinson When the Lion Feeds - Wilbur Smith Pushing Ice - Alastair Reynolds Ark - Stephen Baxter Voyage - Stephen Baxter All the Pretty Horses - Cormac McCarthy Star of the Sea - Joseph O'Conner
What are your working habits when you write?
    Disciplined
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
Prefer to let rip and edit afterwards
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
To become an author that makes hard science fiction accessible and enjoyable to everyone, and for my work to make people think a bit deeper about who they are, where they come from, and how they treat others - and who 'others' really are.
    Your worst habit?
Pleased to say I am now not being the king of procrastination anymore! I guess my next worst habit is going in to too greater detail.
Your opinion on the books industry?
It is a tough game, but everyone does their best
    Where do you write?
On a boat to work, of all places...
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
I have a journalism degree and worked as a reporter for six months but I hated writing in news style all the time. So I occasionally write features and am concentrating on my novel. I spent my 20s teaching snowboarding and skiing all over the world.

Hey your November comp entry is brilliant! So vivid. I wonder, is it taken from part of your novel?

Benjamin86 Haha, thanks for the thoughts guys. Yes I will definitely be finishing the WIP, as it is what I am bring to the self editing course I have booked on for the new year. Plus I have been working on it since 2014 on and off! Yes thinking of a new idea almost feels like cheating!

      L. Can you develop that new one alongside the one you're already working on?

EmmaD It's a bit like the temptation to adultery, isn't it - and adultery is almost always as much about the (longstanding, dull) marriage you're inside, as the sparkly, sexy new idea that's come sashaying along... Can you make some notes, do some reading round? The new idea won't be any the worse for (mixed metaphor alert) sitting on the back burner for a bit, having the occasional tasty scrap tossed into the pot, while you finish the current one.

Raine And Ben - Make lots of notes, but keep at the one you're working on. The new idea will benefit from cogitation time, and the old one will benefit from your added motivation to get it finished!

I think it’s worth saying publicly, that Mr Athelstone here was THE first person to successfully purchase an alcoholic beverage at the 2017 festival of writing. That’s pretty impressive as we were all gunning for the bar halfway through the ...
