Hello Cloudies. I intend to try to spend more time on my fiction writing in 2018, and to use the Cloud to help me develop my skills. There is so much help and support on here!
Information

What genre do you primarily write in?
    Other non-fiction
If you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?
    Historical fiction
    Are your reading habits ...?
    Omnivorous
    Who is your favourite author(s)?
Julie Cohen, Clare Mackintosh, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy,Tracy Chevalier, Jojo Moyes, Victoria Hislop
And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)

What are your working habits when you write?
    Procastinatory
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
    Ten times? Why so little?
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
To write quality fiction that resonates with readers and isn't easily forgotten. To write successful non-fiction that helps schools to make the best use of their resources to ensure children and young people can fulfil their potential.
    Your worst habit?
Having too many projects on the go at once and dotting around from one to the other.
Your opinion on the books industry?
Self-publishing makes the most sense to me
    Where do you write?
At home or in a library
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
I had twin boys when my daughter was only 2, love holidays, sing in the church choir, and went to the Royal Garden Party in 2013 as a reward for being on a DfE school funding advisory group. I love being with fellow writers, in person and virtually.

I have no idea how they sell at those prices. But I still think it's good to do a series - after all, you don't need to invent a whole set of new characters, locations etc with each new book! I have several ideas for mine - I just need to apply ...

I'm still mourning the change of name. Writers Workshop did what it said on the tin - helpful, inclusive and interactive, a learning experience. 'Jericho Writers' has associations of battles and walls crumbling, and you need to be in the know, to ...

Hi Squidge, I can't speak for traditional publishing, but many of my indie-publishing friends swear by writing series in order to get enthusiastic fans who will buy everything they write. At the extreme, they are trying to attract 'whale readers' ...

Thanks Harry - that sounds more promising than I first thought from your original description. It's all in the presentation as they say!

Good of you to clarify things, Harry, and I hope you take on board the very astute points made by those who've already responded. I would urge caution in your presentation of the case - for example, claiming anyone could find £30 is bound to ...

Just as I'd made a resolution to commit to the Cloud as I return to my fiction, they decide to change it... There are other free options for writers' forums, so I don't understand why WW thinks that people would pay, especially when it is a gateway ...

Julie C Hello Cloudies - I hope your Christmas was full of good cheer. I intend to try to spend more time on my fiction writing in 2018, and to use the Cloud to help me develop my skills; I jumped straight into novels and it feels as if I need more time on the basics. I only started using the Cloud when I joined the Self Editing course, and as a relative newbie to it I confess I'm not sure how best to use it or even where to start. So... any ideas please?

Julie C Thanks Raine. I subscribe to Writing Magazine and they have a free comp each month for subscribers so I'm going to try that as well. Just wish there were more hours in the day, but by choice I'm reducing my consultancy from 2.5 days a week to 1 day a week to leave more time for writing. Got to feed the soul :)

Kate Something I found really useful after the SE course was doing the monthly cloud comeptitions. Because of the restricted words you have to make sure every one counts and you can work on honing those skills you learnt on SE. Made a big difference to me I think. Similarly doing feedback in the critique section. You have to try and figure out why something works/doesn't work, and understanding that can have a big knock on effect in your own writing.

Julie C Thanks Kate - I have struggled with short stories in the past but you are right that they are a good discipline. I'm dusting off a course on them I bought a couple of years ago (think I'm a course hoarder!) and aiming to have a bash. I did enjoy doing feedback on the SE course so I will have a look at the critique section too. Part of the problem is working out how the site works and where the gems are! Thanks, Julie

      L. I agree with Kate, the monthly competition is good practice and the critique section giving feedback but also putting some of your work on there. I found people always spot things I’ve missed.

Raine Another option is to look out for short story comps online. They often have a theme, which gives you a starting point, and the deadline can give you some structure too. And all the SE course tips for novels are just as relevant to shorts.

Hi Julie. Re the monthly comp site, if you look at the tags at the top of the WW screen, click on 'Forum'. This will take you to a menu - scroll down it to 'Competitions'. You will then see a list of monthly competitions, the newest (present one) at the top. Hope that's enough, but if not, please shout ... and good luck x
