Are you a ...?Writer published in mags, etcWhat genre do you primarily write in?General fictionIf you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?Sci-fiAre your reading habits ...?OmnivorousAnd your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick, The World According To Garp by John Irving, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, At The Mountains of Madness by H. P. LovecraftWhat are your working habits when you write?ProcastinatoryAre you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?Prefer to let rip and edit afterwardsYour ultimate writing ambition? To be a published author, and possibly critic/journalist. I also write music. Perhaps I should decide on a focus?Your worst habit?Perfectionism.Your opinion on the books industry?Too much celebrity and hype, but good books still get throughWhere do you write? My bedroomWhat else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?I find it hilarious (if mildly horrifying) how many people consider the likes of Dan Brown and J.K. Rowling to be serious literary fiction... Also, how many vampire books do we need these days?

About
I'm a young, frustrated writer living in Manchester. I currently write music critiques and interviews for the Student Direct: Mancunion newspaper (weekly), and hope to branch out into the opinion and film sections in the near future.
I also want to write a novel that's been going around in my brain for years, but feel unequipped to do so at this point. Looking for some advice in this area!
In-keeping with my theme of frustration, I'm a guitarist trying desparately to get 3 bands going while writing songs, lyrics, and trying to study for a law degree. My life is a bit hectic...

by zomb00 1 year agoKatatonia! You're the first person I've came across online who likes them other than me :D
Also, you should write your short story. What's stopping you? -
by Elysia 2 years agoDefinitely! Although I am trying to rectify that - I use The Colour Out Of Space and The Hound in my teaching, so hopefully I am inspiring a whole new generation of Lovecraft fans ;)
Have you ever tried writing in his style? I gave it a go not long ago - it's immense fun ^^D -
by Elysia 2 years agoI find that Lovecraft in general is pretty amazing - you simply don't get writers like him in this day and age. Stories like The Shadow Out of Time are just way before their time in some ways; no wonder he is so influential! Have you bothered with any of the other Cthulhu Mythos authors? I recently got hold of some Clark Ashton Smith and Arthur Machen, and I am really keen to get stuck into them. Shame work has me reading Private Peaceful instead...

by maryluv 2 years agoHi Mandalore. I would start by writing out your character profiles. Then compile a mind map, which will allow you to join up seemingly random ideas into some kind of format. It's amazing how quickly you can make connections this way. Worth a try, anyhow! Works for the more random type of writer's brain. Ie, mine.
