This is our back garden, where we grow the rest of the vegetables
in raised beds. We intend to reorganize the triangular beds this
winter as they aren't very practical.
Chicken heaven! My girls will help with the garden clearance if you
need assistance with the reorganisation. They like digging, and
fertilize the soil as they turn it over. Not so good at planting
though.
It's a deal! We won't be doing any planting now until next spring,
and in the meantime they can get to work on what is actually very
heavy clay soil in that part of the garden. There are lots of
lovely slugs and snails for them to eat, too, as part-payment.
Brilliant!
I'll put it to them. Slugs and snails are rare commodities in our
garden so when they find one, there is a rejoicing in heaven. I
think that's one of the reasons Hyacinth goes walk-about down the
road, but I worry - slug pellets aren't good for her nor her
eggshells - it's been suggested as one of the reasons for the
decline in garden birds - eating slugs killed by slug pellets make
their shells so thin they break.
I can imagine the terrible problems that slug pellets cause for
birds. However, please reassure Hyacinth and her chums that we have
no such things here. We are almost totally organic in this garden,
so there is a lovely range of pesticide-free insects for them to
munch on.
