You don't have to put them on your cv. When you're famous you can reveal how you used to write for women's magazines - shock! horror!

"John Alty" commented on Catasshe's Blog "Adverbs (and adjectives)".
I don't think it improves a piece to simply remove all adverbs, sometimes they do add something. But generally I'm suspicious of intensifiers - (very, really) - just find a better verb if the one you have needs to be intensified; repeaters - ...

Squidge Scott, it's the Festival of Writing - an annual writer's conference run by WW (owners of the cloud) where you meet hundreds of other writers, agents, publishers, can learn from the experts and get your work critiqued. For many cloudies, it's the highlight of the year.

Scott_Martin Sounds absolutely fantastic. If I can get my act together and write my script, I will join you all next year. Is it always in York? I quite enjoy history so I have always planned to visit at some point.

John Alty My daughter and her family live in Houston, Texas, on Galveston Bay. Thanks to the miracle of modern communications we've kept in touch as the disaster there has unfolded. Her house is on stilts, as are many in her small island community, but their roof will require replacing and who knows what damage to the local infrastructure will be revealed when the flood waters recede. For the last three days several families have been getting together, by boat or in waders, to share food. Tonight's feast will be macaroni cheese, broccoli and beans, apparently. She says they are all in good spirits and, thank goodness, the booze supply is holding up well.

Clytemnestra Having looked up your geographic location, John, I see you are as far removed from beloved family members in America as am I and no doubt feel as helpless as I do when weather conditions of biblical proportions hit their region. All we can do at such times is cross our (supersticious) fingers and pray that the indomitable human spirit will come out of this crisis stronger than before. From what I see on TV, the Lone Star State has no intention of giving up on life. Pulling together is the order of the day and they are setting an example for us all.

Kate Must be scary John. Everything crossed she comes out the other side without incident. Liberal application of the booze will certainly help.

Clytemnestra Oh John! My most beloved brother was away from home on business inTexas when Hurricane Katrina appeared to be heading hiis way. I had no access to the internet at that time but stayed in touch with his wife and family via landine telephone. Katrina veered away toward New Orleans and my brother suffered litte but a sideswipe of heavy rain from her skirts while New Orleans was devastated. This hurricane is so much worse, both for your daughter's family and for you worrying about them. Glad to hear they're over the worst now, that they are all in good spirits and the macaroni cheese, brocolli, beans and booze are holding out. Thinking if you. Clytemnestra.

Fabulous description of life on board a tea clipper, John. You build such a strong picture that reading the piece is like watching a film – I was right there battling the waves with the crew, hoping they’d reach Blighty.

John - thanks for the comp entry. 'Spume' is one of my favourite words, and I always like any prose with seafaring technical vocab. No idea why, but there it is. Very enjoyable.

Wonderfully atmospheric, John. Breathtaking scenes of a storm tossed ship and the quietness afterwards. I can understand the need to return - it's what makes him feel alive. Lovely writing.
