Clytemnestra If you can master the art of short-story writing, Writerguy, then you are in the foothills of writing a novel

Writerguy Well, maybe a little off being mastered, but when htere's so much planning to do on a novel, it's nice just to write and have fun

Clytemnestra Yes of course, but all that is necessary in novel-writing is necessary to short-story writing too. Both must be properly constructed, grammatically true and with a plot. Bothmust have a beginning, a middle and a satisfactory ending. Never underestimate the sweat required to produce a truly great short story. Master the art of capturing a reader in your opening sentence and you may go far.

Writerguy Stephen King talks about stories being like fossils that you dig up from the ground. Your job is then not to break them by usinmg clumsy tools, That always appeals to me, and is what I'm trying to do now when I'm working.

Sandra An even lovelier SK quote about short stories was that they were "a kiss in the dark from a stranger"

Writerguy Also I remember the Northern Lights when it came it in the 9o's I think. The books are so good, and the film I personally think missed so much especially Lyra's relationship with the Gyptians, and her view of Oxford, but the movies never are as good. Given what covenant does in the first few chapters of the opening book, probably no movie audience would tolerate it but it's essential to his dilemma.

Newbie Yes, they're not for those of weak disposition that's for sure, especially the razor blade scene - horrible. I'm not good with heights, so even reading about where he appeared gave me sweaty palms. I agree that the film of Northern Lights picked out the essence of the first book. There is so much in them.

Jillybean A BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials is being made and I imagine that'll be much grittier than the rather bloodless film.

Writerguy Great. Even Philip Pullman distanced himself from it, although arguably he shouldn't have sold the rights. But cool, I reckon the beeb will do a good job

Daedalus Originally the signs were good. Tom Stoppard was signed up to write the screenplay. Then they replaced him with the writer-director of American Pie.
