Information
  • Are you a ...?
    Unpublished writer (so far)
What genre do you primarily write in?
    Sci-fi
If you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?
    Crime
    Are your reading habits ...?
    Omnivorous
    Who is your favourite author(s)?
    J.G.Ballard
And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)
Alice in Wonderland / Through the looking glass: Lewis Carroll Concrete Island: J.G.Ballard The Black Dahlia: James Ellroy Zulu: Saul David The Bible: Various Brighton Rock: Graham Greene Not to speak of the dog... ed. Christopher Reid
What are your working habits when you write?
    Disciplined
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
Prefer to let rip and edit afterwards
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
To write, publish and see a book of mine on a bookshelf in a bookshop just as someone picks it up and says something like,"Oh this is just the sort of thing I was looking for, I can't wait to read it". Then I sign it for them and wander off feeling great
    Your worst habit?
I worry constantly about word counts. This is J.G.Ballards fault. He said in an interview that he wrote 1000 words a day. If I don't do this, I feel a failure and that lasts ages. If I do do it I feel very big headed - this does not last very long at all
Your opinion on the books industry?
A conspiracy from start to finish. My work will die with me
    Where do you write?
Lot's of places - I write best on the go in notebooks. I write most productively at home on my laptop.
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
I live roundabout Milton Keynes. My writing is heavily influenced by concrete ideas that I turn into dream-like waffle. I hope that one day to see an analyst who will listen to my ideas, explain them to me and I will probably say, "Oh, that's what it is"

Poros Ooops. That was painless. I just joined and started reading some of the stuff on here. I think it's great. I'm glad sqidge found her notebook. I know that feeling - I wrote a story and gave it to some friends for some feedback. They said it was good - one of them said it was the best short story he had ever read. My eyes filled with tears of joy and humility until I asked for the notebook back. The fools had lost it! Daily I ask for a formation of toads to invade them as they go about things.

Hilly Scan or photocopy anything before it heads out the door. Back up everything on the computer at least twice in different places (more if you can). Better than casting a hex or whatever.

Squidge Ta, Poros..thing is, Hilly, I don't work well on the computer when doing the initial planning. Somehow I get too bogged down in the editing at too early a stage, so I really need my notebooks! Good job the novel had already been published...

Hilly Hi Squidge, I work in notebooks too. It's certainly tricky. But when they go missing, there is the proverbial 'kick'. An aside, I had a painting of mine nicked from an art shop. Someone took their eye off the ball and all that. It was a sort of accolade, I suppose but I wish I'd got some form of copy of it.

Poros Yes to you both but I was working in the days of no computers and a photocopier was still an expensive magical thing that few of us had access to. I still work on notebooks but usually have multiple copies of most things. The fun bit is none of the copies match so it can be good to try and stitch them together. All part of the fun!

Hilly Always fun bar the mental break down when none of it matches...
