John Alty Coincidence. Yesterday, Wednesday, I completed my entry for this months competition. As you will see when I get round to posting it, the weather catastrophe is a tornado and my MC is called Aaron. Today, Thursday, as is my habit, I completed The Times Quick Cryptic crossword (No 1133). The answer to 6 Down was Tornado, the answer to 10 across was Aaron. They form a neat crucifix. Ooh!

John Alty @Raine. I can offer coup, sober, cognac and eros, if that helps. @Daeds No, I did it here in Lancashire.

John Alty Well, coup might be a little strenuous and sober sounds boring, so perhaps tipples (9 across) and musical comedy (4 down) ?

John Alty Thank you Sandra. From the Times this morning I can offer barbarian, stab, barry and ole. So far. Still can't get over that coincidence.

Sandra Didn't something similar happen in WWII? Naming of beaches, Juno etc. which sound like code names for assaults had been leaked.

John Alty Just looked it up. Interesting, but it turns out it probably wasn't coincidence, it was schoolboys having overheard US and Canadian soldiers talking about D-Day and suggesting the beach names to their headmaster who was a crossword compiler and would regularly ask the kids to provide solution words. To have the subject of my story and the name of the main character appear in the following days crossword is pretty mind boggling. That they form a neat crucifix adds significantly to the odds against, I would think.

John Alty England play Croatia tonight in the semifinal of the World Cup. As much as I want, and expect, them to win I can't help thinking what a fantastic achievement it would be for Croatia, a tiny country of 4m people, to get into the final.

John Alty I have two problems when contemplating a blog here: My past was extinguished so I don't know what I've posted already and I have never worked out how to include pictures. (The latter is a bit sad for a bloke that has built and maintains four websites!)

Barny You have to host it somewhere, then when you insert picture in your blog you use the url of the picture.

John Alty Yes, that's the way all blogs used to be. Now only this one seems to cling to that system; I've long ago stopped putting my pictures on a hasting site. someone once suggested it wasn't necessary, but I guess they were wrong.
