Information
  • Who is your favourite author(s)?
Robert Harris, Cormac McCarthy, Mark Mills
And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)
Winter's Bone, Birdsong, No Country For Old Men, Touching The Void, Into Thin Air, Everest, by Walt Unsworth, The Ghost
What are your working habits when you write?
    Procastinatory
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
    Some self-editing
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
I would like to be able to earn a reasonable living from writing...wouldn't we all?
    Your worst habit?
You don't want to know that. Well, in terms of writing, it would have to be a distinct lack or self-discipline.
Your opinion on the books industry?
Too much celebrity and hype, but good books still get through
    Where do you write?
I have a dedicated room with a great view, no telly and a fireplace
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
Born and brung up in Belfast, (well Ulster), I am often accused of being grumpy, which is not true. I am only grumpy when people make me grumpy. I live in Devon at the minute and work with horses and people who want to get fit and lose weight.

About

I had a travel/adventure book published about 12 years ago by what could be described as a "vanity publisher" or "pirate". Thing was, I was perfectly happy about the deal. The book got into Dillon's and WH Smith, and the first edition of 1500 copies sold out. So, despite what was and is said about Minerva Press (as was), I was quids in and perfectly comfortable with the end result. I have now been advised to re-write the book, lose a hundred pages and have it properly edited then look for a major publisher. Don't know if I can be bothered, I was happy with what i had written.
I did an Arvon course last February to get the creative juices flowing, but I met a special lady and neither of us have written a word since! Waste of money? Probably not, the course was great, and so is she.

I'm now trying to write a "spoof" satirical novel about an IRA renegade splinter group who manage to competely bollox the straightforward assasination of the son of an army general at his minor public school. The headmaster is on a cost-cutting mission and is engaged in replacing his staff with DROIDS when the incident occurs... I know, it's not one for everyone, but I used to work there and I enjoy taking the piss out of former colleagues.
Away from writing, I enjoy running, Rugby (watching now) cricket and riding horses extremely fast and extremely badly. Ditto for cars.
