Inky

Poems aren't my forte but this is one for my wee cat, who sadly passed on a few weeks ago.

 INKY

You were on a South Belfast street, dignified and handsome,

You paid me no attention and I smiled.

I chatted to your humans and agreed to take you home,

Wrapped up in a towel, 'cause you're so wild.

You had a good explore and I knew that we'd be friends,

I could see it in your wary, wide-eyed stare.

Sure enough, my lie-ins very quickly disappeared

As I woke at dawn to find you standing there,

On my chest,

I'd had enough rest, now it's time for breakfast once again.

Then outside to see the birds and enjoy the morning air,

I had your towel waiting if I thought that it might rain.

We had three years of snuggles, of purrs and kneads and mews,

Some yowls and growls and scratches, a little bite or two,

But every time I saw you, a smile brightened up my brain

And I never could wait to get back home to you again.

Now you're no longer here, though you're always in my heart,

If you're always in my thoughts, we'll never truly be apart.

I hope we'll be reunited, one day, when I'm gone

Until then I love and miss you, my little furry one.

This Cloud is an incredible place, eh? Before it existed, we may still have written personal things and perhaps they had meaning to us alone. But now there is somewhere to share the most personal feelings and writing where we know it will be read, acknowledged and appreciated. I think that makes a piece like this a greater tribute.

This is very poignant and I can completely empathise with your loss. I enjoyed reading it x

Oh no! I'm reading this with tears in my eyes. It's lovely, but I'm so sorry.

Oh, Inky and Inky, I'm so sorry, too. The companionship between humans and other animals is sometimes vastly under-rated, no? It's lovely that you found each other, albeit for so brief a time. Virtual hug.

More sniffs here. And so many of the phrases sum up the relationship between cats and their humans. As Whisks says, that companionship is often underrated.

Thanks to all for your lovely comments, I really appreciate it, it means a lot to me to be able to post this in a place where people understand. Thanks to Weens for suggesting it.
It's amazing how close you can become to an animals when you spend time together, I wish good health to everyone's furry/feathered friends:-)

I think you're very brave to post something so personal, so thank you. And I'll add that I'm not sure whether or not there's a heaven, but of one thing I'm certain - if there is, it's not just for humans; it's for all of us or none of us. So if *any* of us meet again, then Big Inky and Little Inky most certainly will.

Thanks Whisks, I hope you're right:-) I have no concrete notion of what happens after death either but so long as it involves meeting again or just being reborn for a happy life. I like thinking of him already being reborn and being spoiled again already.

"Have you seen out cat? [Meeow, Meeow' misssing' with a photgraph.
Signs like this are often posted on the trees where I live. I always find them rather sad. Cpuld you try a poem on this?

Inky, I've read of several occasions when a beloved pet has died and then apparently reincarnated in another animal's body some time later. There are some remarkable stories of such things - for instance, a new kitten arrives in the house for the first time and immediately starts playing with the dead cat's favourite toy, or has a strange habit that's identical to that of the lost cat. I expect some of the stories have more to do with wishful thinking than fact, but others are so remarkable that it's hard to dismiss them.

This is such a sweet poem. Isn't it amazing how some of the most emotional times in our life bring out the best and most surprising pieces of writing.

Thanks Spangles, Penny and Mike - I don't know about writing a poem about lost cat notices, it'd probably put me on a downer for weeks!
Spangles, that would be lovely if it happens, I think it'd be great if animals were reincarnated as their 'owners' new pet, over and over. For people with their first pet, as Inky was to me, well they must be new lives. It would explain why his tail was dislocated at birth; lack of practice. So many happy options:-)

The dislocated tail is the sort of thing that apparently is repeated with the 'new' animal. As for you and Inky, you might be very old friends who were reunited from a previous life…  As you so rightly say, so many happy options!

My cat Henry is 12 yr old now- but I got him and his sister Tabitha when they were 5 weeks old. Tab was gorgeous and would come into my room and knead my chest til I got up and fed her. Henry has always been 'aloof'- not really a 'people cat.' So it was with tab I bonded most. She was only 9 months old when she got killed by a car and I still miss her now. Henry has his funny ways and can be very bolshy in his affections-(he's quite big and when he rubs against your legs he can knock you off balance!) Anyway- point is 11 years on and I still miss the little cat I only knew for such a short time.

So sorry to hear that Gerilyn, Tabitha sounds like a little sweetie:-( It's amazing how quickly they become special though isn't it? And it's nice that you got them both as kittens and got to make their lives great from early on. Henry sounds like a funny chap, he must be glad to be with the person who looked after his wee sister:-)

I am inspired to find my old pics of Tabitha (taken before digi camera's were the norm!) so will scan em in and post on my profile along with Henry. Inky was a very beautiful cat by the way. x
