by Rebecca Holmes 1 year agoAs long as you don't mind bits missing where it's been eaten. Oh - I'm hungry now.

by Spangles 1 year agoHang on, Inky, just putting the finishing touches to it this morning. If only!
The filming went well, thanks. Although we had to redo things several times to get it all in. The series is The Great British Bake-off and I crop up in episode 5, on pastry.
As a matter of fact, I'm doing more filming tomorrow. For a different TV series, on a different topic, with a different presenter. I can only hope they've supplied me with a huge Winnebago that befits my megastar status. -
by Spangles 1 year agoIt's a programme on the history of baking, presented by Mel and Sue. I'm going to be talking about pies, as I wrote a book about them. They want me to talk about medieval pies, such as humble pie. I will also be talking about the stone that was removed from Samuel Pepys' bladder - lots of people had them, mostly caused by the coarse flour they ate. I also hope to be talking about bread, as that's another of my favourite topics. (I don't mean to imply, by the way, that Pepys's stone is a favourite topic! It just came up in conversation when I was talking to the producer, and she wants to include it in the show.)
The programme is going to be broadcast on BBC2, but I don't know when. I'll keep you posted. Alternatively, if I think it's going to be awful, I may maintain a discreet silence and hope you've forgotten!
Have a good sleep and a good night tonight. -
by Spangles 1 year agoThanks for your good wishes. I am sending lots of good wishes to you too for the you-know-what.
I'm going to London today and it's already boiling hot here so I will probably melt. Not good as I'm being filmed for a TV programme about baking. This is true! I hope it happens this time as last time I turned up and they had to cancel because they were running late.
Have a good day, whatever you're doing. xx -
by Spangles 1 year agoThanks very much for the pointers/suggestions, which I will explore. The world's oldest lifeboat sounds fascinating. I shall definitely follow that up.
That image of Inky was so strong that I felt compelled to tell you about it. I often keep such things to myself but this time was different.
Sorry about the f******l, by the way. -
by Spangles 1 year agoYou've been talking to yourself, Inky! I hope you enjoyed the football, by the way, and had something to celebrate at the end of it.
My mother loved good novels and also biographies/autobiographies. I think she'd have been thrilled if I'd written a biog of Evelyn Waugh or Graham Greene, instead of a book on palmistry.
I'm OK, thanks. A bit up and down, but I have lots to be grateful for and lots to look forward to, which helps.
When I read about you being at your parents' and seeing Inky's grave in their garden, I had a very strong image which hasn't left me since, of you standing looking at it sadly while the spirit Inky stands next to you, squeaking like mad to tell you he's still with you and asking you not to be sad. This is such a powerful image that I felt I had to tell you about it.
I must start the new book on Tuesday. I've been thinking about it and mapping out its contents, but I have yet to put pen to paper. Or finger to keyboard.
I'm going to look up Redcar and see what I can find out about it. Hope you're having a lovely weekend there. -
by Inktrailer 1 year agoThat says a lot in itself Spangles, that she liked to show her friends your books. What kind of book did she want to read? How are you doing though, you okay?
Thanks for your words about Inky, he was a sweetheart, even when he tried to be tough! Like a little tiger. I'm at my parents atm which is where I brought him, he's buried in the garden so it's nice to be here and see his patch. I'm in Redcar, which is where I'll be moving back to (near Middlesbrough, look between Hartlepool and Whitby on a map to find it). I'll try and find out some little-known facts when I'm back! When do you start on the new book then, or are you already on it? Have a great Saturday:-) -
by Spangles 1 year agoThank you so much for your lovely, lovely message. I hope she was proud of me although she often seemed very disappointed that I wasn't writing the sort of books she wanted to read. But I did discover from her friends that she used to show them my books and obviously was proud of me.
I've been thinking a lot about you losing Inky. He looked such a sweetheart, and so handsome. At least you were able to give him a very happy and loving home for the last three years of his life, which is a wonderful thing to do.
Yes, you're absolutely right about my seaside book - it's the watery follow up to Red Sky. So I may be picking your brains for fascinating facts about your bit of the north-east coast. That sounds an exciting move! Can you tell me where you're going?
Big hugs to you, too!
