by Johncjg 1 month agohey thanks I appreciate that, I think I've recently found my voice as a writer. I've been reading a Game of Thrones series and have read well over 1.5 million words and as a consequence my writing has improved dramatically. Have you ever heard of Hemmingways Iceberg theory of writing? if not, i would recommend you look it up, it's a writing skill that can vastly improve a person's ability to write!

by Johncjg 1 month agohello, thank you for your post, im surprised you enjoyed my writing if you dont like fantasy, as it is pure fantasy!
the reason i included the first part is because my fantasy world is a central character itself so it had to be introduced first.
and yes harry potter was definitely an influence, but aside from the opening chapter there are very few similarities between the stories aside from the age of the protagonist.
and im glad you said you thought you knew where the story is going. i have set up the opening specifically for this reason to lull the reader into a sense of familiarity. i wont give too much away but ill simply say that Lord Brandon is actually not a villain and becomes a secondary protagonist and Celes actually ends up saving his life. -
by Elysia 1 year agoHi sevensins! I know exactly how you feel - I love the likes of Lovecraft, Stoker and Poe, and I teach Dickens, Austen and Shelley, so I am greatly influenced by their works. When I first arrived here, I was torn to shreds for my wordy, over dramatic prose (the responses to my Birth of a Blood Moon part one / two on the critique forum pretty much sum it up!) and although a part of me resents that the modern palate leans towards the simple, verging on the austere in places, I do acknowledge that if I want to be published, I have play the game and therefore learn how to trim away the fat. It's hard - writing used to be easy for me, but now I spend all my time worrying about the overuse of adverbs, using the passive voice, adding in too much detail etc... I think I have gone a little bit too far the other way, when I spend more time worrying about what people will be thinking about the structure of what I am writing as opposed to simply enjoying the process, which is a shame - I don't advocate that at all! It's a learning curve, though, and if it makes us better (published!!!) writers, then it is worth it in the end ;)
