Hilly, I agree totally with Newbie ~ loved the descriptive writing, which took me right back to other Mediterranean places with wild thyme, broom and all those almond, olive and citrus trees. Lucky you living in that country now, even if it took ...

Very much like the extract and would want to read on. For me the choice of title is either 'Less Dead Than You Might Expect' or Debi's alternative 'Less Dead'.

Athelstone Whatever it was meant the whole server it was on wasn't responding. Jill, if the same thing happens in future, not just for the cloud, there are several websites that will run an independent check for you, e.g. downforeveryoneorjustme.com, and isitdownrightnow.com.

Thank you, Jill but it isn't my birthday today, not until May, although WC seems hell-bent on saying it is - this is the second time in a few weeks.

Enjoy your day, whatever you're doing. :-)

Interesting to read of your childhood memories of Aden, although as you say, 'sadly it is still a war zone...'

'Small Wars' is particularly interesting for me as we had older friends who were there in EOKA days and I didn't really know before the extent of what went on ~ only bits and pieces. Also, of course, it is always good to be able to imagine vividly the places written about in books, even if some the action is quite horrifying.

Good afternoon, Jill. I love re-discovering books on my shelves that I read yonks ago and re-reading. I think I particularly enjoyed 'Small Wars' as my dad was involved in one of the so-called Small Wars, in Aden. Some of my earliest memories are of the beach out there, often too hot to walk on, the goats in the streets, the shark nets, the barren volcanic rocks in the background.

Sadly, it's still a war zone these days with widespread hunger and starvation.

Thanks Jill. It's been the hardest thing I've ever been through, and to make it worse my grandmother died in the early hours of Monday morning. So it continues.
