Phew! I'm exhausted just reading this. And saddle sore from sitting in front of the computer. Barry, you are a star, and I'm sure everyone at St Andrews thinks so too. Keep pedaling!

Fascinating, Susan. It's amazing how insidious the need for information that doesn't tell us much is. From 1980-1984 (interesting coincidence?) I lived in a place where we had no TV, and the daily papers arrived either one or two days late. In the ...

Skylark, I feel your pain and felt it in a job where the evidence we had to provide was nowhere near as detailed and nit-picky as teachers are asked to provide. Going through unnecessary hoops is neither constructive nor helpful for the child and ...

Ooh - clicked the wrong button and posted half a comment. Your picture would fit some of the forest stories I tell. Strange places, forests, with minds of their own.

The very best of luck to you, Barry! It's a big challenge for a great cause. The work of youth clubs is critically important, and if we let them founder through lack of funds, we will reap the consequences. One I have been working in has recently ...

Welcome aboard, Bunny Brown! I think failure is generally where writing starts, whether it be our own or other people's. Writers get to share it around more than most people, which has to be good. And after all, success makes for boring stories. ...

My blackbird lives in a tree - how boring is that? But her hubby sings wonderfully just outside my workshop. Blackbird song being one of my favourite sounds in the universe, I'm generally on their side in everything, and even have an old cassette ...

:-) I edited out a few other nuggets in order to keep within the word count. Mind you, you've read quite a few of them before as they often make it on to my fb status! :-)

Hello, formerly known a BJ! I decided it was time to step away from the pseudonym (she was always a far cooler character than me, anyway... ^^D) and use my real life nickname - the one my mum has called me since birth. She wanted to call me something terrible like Celicia, but Dad put his foot down and so I was called Claire. Then Mum insisted I had all the letters I could possibly have in my name (hence Claire Jayne), which she then shortened to CJ before I even left the hospital - and since then, it's stuck (although I will forever be Claire to my Dad!) :-)

Then why (or why) didn't you sit me down, wield some sort of torture implement and FORCE me to read him?? :-) It would have been a service. Can't tell you how much I'm enjoying The Last Werewolf (should finish it this evening) but it's light years since I've enjoyed discovering a new author as much. His back catalogue is now busy shoulder charging the rest of my to be read pile out of the way and muscling itself to the head of the queue. Yep. He's right up my strasse and no mistake

John, I can't find the reference, but...it was you who talked to me about Glen Duncan, yes? Otherwise my marblecake has been well and truly misplaced
