Trying to complete first book...loving and loathing every painful minute of it.
Information
  • Are you a ...?
    Published author
What genre do you primarily write in?
    Other non-fiction
If you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?
    Comedy
    Are your reading habits ...?
    Earthy
What are your working habits when you write?
    Procastinatory
Are you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?
    Ten times? Why so little?
    Your ultimate writing ambition?
To get a mention on Richard and Judy. To continue writing full time. To write a screen play. For my first book NOT to be an embarrassing flop.
    Your worst habit?
Listening to my inner critic, obsessive editing, paining for hours over a word/sentence/paragraph! Using too many exclamation marks!!!!
Your opinion on the books industry?
It is a tough game, but everyone does their best
    Where do you write?
In my office at home. Large bay window overlooks the street enables me to people watch in between moments of self doubt ( i.e every few minutes), but is not very forgiving should I decide to pick my nose.
What else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?
err, can I return to this later? Worried that I may take too long over it, wrestling with inner critic to get it spot on!

I'm assuming "Ta Da" is an exclamation with the emphasis on the second sylable and not and expression of thanks referring to our relative ages!

Hi Face. To reply to someone just click on their name and that takes you to their Profile page. Scroll about halfway down to find the box where you can write on their wall. That way, if they've set it up, they'll get and email teling them you have replied. If you 'reply' on your own wall they won't know it's there unless they happen to spot its copy on the general wall.

    Hi,
Thanks for this. The most I've achieved in a week is 6000, the least is 2 (words!). There are good days, bad days, and really really BAD days. I'm on a deadline, and although a deal is the ultimate ambition of any writer, the pressure piles on big time. I've now taken to logging the time and number of words at the start of the day, set myself a target ( additional words) and then measure it at the end of the day. Honestly though there are many times when I just want to throw the towel in....you know, sod it and get a job in Tesco!

I consider 3000 words a productive week! A friend told me yesterday he'd finished his 28k story - doing 5k since Friday. When I told him I'd written 20 he was impressed, until he realised I meant 20 words! If I can get 750 words in a day I'm ecstatic. I often rewrite a sentence over and over, so first draft takes ages, but my 2nd is always pretty speedy and pain-free.

    Hi again,
Thanks for this. Trying to work out how to navigate my way round this, when what I raelly shoudl be doing is working on my book. I set myself a 3000 word target today, and although I've been at my desk since 8.15 am I've only written 300, excluding this! oops.

Well you have come to the right site. Everyone on here is very friendly. Just join in any conversation going on the main wall. You can write on your own wall, or if you want to talk to someone directly, just click on their name and it will take you to their page. Scroll down and you will see the message box which you can type in. Alternately, if you want to send someone a private message, you will see a tab at the top of their page saying 'send message', also an 'add to friends' tab and 'send wave' They are all self explanatory when you go into them.

    Hi thanks,
Just thought I'd check it out in the hope that I can meet others that are suffering as much as me!! It's a lonely this writing lark!
