Are you a ...?Writer published in mags, etcWhat genre do you primarily write in?General fictionIf you write in more than one area, what is your next most favoured genre?PoetryAre your reading habits ...?OmnivorousWho is your favourite author(s)?Ursula le Guin, George R.R. Martin,Lucy M. Boston for children, V. S. Naipaul, Shakespeare, Robin Hobb, Mark Haddon, Pat Barker...And your all time favourite books? (You can change these at any time, by the way ...)A Wizard of Earthsea, Saville,Shakespeare,A House for Mr. Biswas,Interview with the Vampire,Eye in the Door (series),The Children of Green Knowe,The House of Doctor Dee..What are your working habits when you write?ProcastinatoryAre you the edit-every-sentence-ten-times type, or do you prefer to let rip?Prefer to let rip and edit afterwardsYour ultimate writing ambition?Simply to see my book on the shelf - vast fees for the film rights and multitudinous awards come second.Your worst habit? The strange habit of finding ANYTHING to do but write - when writing is all I really want to do. As soon as I can't write (at work, in the shower etc.) it all comes and I find myself writing on toilet paper/the back of reports/my leg. Very annoying.Your opinion on the books industry?Too much celebrity and hype, but good books still get throughWhere do you write?at my desk or on my leg/toilet paper/reportsWhat else do you want Word Clouders to know? eg: do you have 9 cats / like paragliding / eat nothing but tinned fish / work in the bath / live in Kettering?I would win the Carnegie Medal for procrastination, like to go to bed at about 3-4 am. May surprise you.

About
Been writing since childhood but done nothing with it until recently. I've had the odd poem, short story and article published, but only just decided to risk rejection with my first novel. Just finished the final edit, and started my second.

by Minxie 2 years agoIt sounds like 'they've' been hanging around waiting for this day for a while, so don't think you've got much choice :] A double celebration when you think about it - completing one and beginning another... (that means more wine) ;)

by Rugby Anthony 2 years agoPolly, I'm waiting for the rest of me to come back from York, so I am not entirely sure who I am today. Maybe I'm not me anymore ... Time for a double espresso.

by ColinTW 2 years agoYes, overall I'd say my 1 to1's were good. It was a fast 10 minutes but I did feel they were talking about my writing and my story, not general comments. Having said that one of the agents had clearly read the submission much more carefully than the other and consequently she gave better notes.
I talked to Harry as I was leaving and he said not everyone was happy and some agents had been less than helpful. Next year he's thinking of running them only with book doctors - no agents. I think that's a good idea. -
by Minxie 2 years agoThat's good to know as I would like to try and get there next year, but would also be on my own if I do go - I have been hearing how clouders have been meeting up, so that is comforting... The venue must have been gorgeous with the weather we've had this weekend... It'll be good reading peoples' experiences of the weekend - especially the one to ones - hope yours went well - minxie

by Gerry 2 years agoThankyou Polly, nice to hear that. I felt somewhat like a man who, due to a slight mishearing, attended a meeting of the Natural History Society dressed as a naturist. (Or who attended a cookery session with the Vegan Society bearing veal and gammon.)

by Gerry 2 years agoHi Polly, I was the idiot who went on last, having taken the judging criteria seriously (1 Literary merit, 2 Performance, 3 Chutzpah) and calculated a Larger-Than-Life approach was therefore required. It wasn’t. The judges ditched criteria 2 and 3, which left only Literary Merit. And for that your best option is to stand at the microphone, avoid props-voices-drama. Just read the thing. Consequently, the quietest performances did best. (Not exactly a “death match... punked-up version of Authonomy Live... really outrageous and entertaining... loud, funny outrageous” etc)

by ColinTW 2 years agoHey Polly - I did look out for you but there were too many people. I found Johnonceuponatime who pointed out Tony and some of the others. I actually spent most of the time talking to non-WC - including a couple of new members who are co-writing (doing one chap each).
I enjoyed it. Interesting and a good atmosphere. What did you think? -
by Minxie 2 years agoi didn't go but looking forward to hearing about the weekend from people who attended - was it welcoming or a bit daunting... minxie

by Jane 2 years agoThank you for taking the time to read my poem. I hope I'm not wasting my time and following a desire that will deaden me. I appreciate the comments, as I'm frightfully insecure.

by Caducean Whisks 2 years agoYes, I did get an email, but worry not - they said to mention it at registration if you're worrying. See you tomorrow! Er, later today?
