A kind rejection!

Published by: Mcallan on 21st Dec 2010 | View all blogs by Mcallan
Hi folks.  Some of you know I had a request from two agents to see my full MS. I had a rejection from one a few weeks ago and had a reply today from the second one who I sent the work to in early October.  It was an encouraging no. I will post the relpy here instead as it's good too see what an agent actually says from time to time!

You have been very patient, and we owe you an apology for keeping you waiting so long. But two of us have now read your submission.

And after all your forbearance, I fear we are going to disappoint you.  In fact, this novel was always going to be a bit of a long shot for us, but you do write wonderfully vividly. It would have been easier for us to arrive at a swift decision if you didn’t!

Even bearing in mind that it lies a bit outside our preferred area of expertise – crime and thrillers – another problem for us is that it hops about in time and place a bit too much for comfort. Obviously the nature of your plot requires a certain amount of that, but if you need to resort to dateline headings one starts to feel something’s not right. It might make your novel more seamless if you tried to manage without them.

All in all, we don’t feel that this novel is one we could be 100% confident of handling successfully. There are of course as many opinions as there are agents and publishers, so it may be that another agent will feel more sanguine about its chances, and of course we hope that proves to be the case.

But in the event that this novel doesn’t find representation, and you don’t feel too discouraged to write something else, we would always be pleased to hear from you again.

************************************************

This is me writing again now...don't why the font has changed colour!..and it won't change back!..hey ho!
It was interesting to see two different sets of comments though.  The first one didn't really engage with my characters or writing, whilst the second did.  So I don't think I will change too much yet, though I am really considering professional help in the new year.  Help for my book not my mind you understand!
So bearing in mind their preffered genres I may resurrect a thriller I did years ago!

Onwards and upwards eh!

Mac

What a lovely, thoughtful, rejection, Makkers. I like them, so this lot can keep their heads :)

Sorry - meant to say something comforting, but I think they've said most of it! And if you're encouraged enough to dig out an old MS, then that's all good. I want to say 'congratulations' but it won't come out right!

Damn - still haven't said anything comforting! It's always disappointing when you're knocked back. Always. It's horrid. Have a little wallow if you like, then dust off them typing fingers and get them workin'! That OK?

What's annoying is that they sound like good sorts to work with! Anyway, at least there is a green shoot or two there to cultivate. Bad luck this time but hope 2011 will be your breakthrough year....

Thanks guys..and yes it is a very 'nice' rejection and they do sound like good eggs! I was pondering afterwards and thought maybe I should have picked my agents better seeing as how crime and thrillers are their bag....but having looked at heir info again it does say 'quality literature'...which I hope mine is..well a teeny bit anyway!
Anyway I'm going to buy a new TV tonight so yah boo sucks!..:)

Wow Mac, what a wonderfully charming, polite, flattering and helpful rejection. You can work with it. Your writing is wonderful so crack on with it dude. This is just two agents! Dont give up at two! One even said that it wasn't in their normal area of expertise! Dont give up; more envelopes & stamps and off you go.

Good luck with it. And do make sure you need to go enough agents before drawing any conclusions about the book. Anywhere from 8-12 agents is about right. More than that and it's a pointless quest. There are only a dozen publishers for most books, so if your hit rate isn't at least 1 in 12, there's not much point in having an agent anyway. Fewer than that, and you haven't yet tested the market. Best of luck ... and if you do need pro help at some stage then I hope you know where to come! Have a lovely Christmas in the meantime.

It's a very 'positive' rejection for sure. As others have said, sounds like it's well worth sending it out to some more agents - after all the fact they've asked for the full MS in the first place shows that its a quality piece.

Mac, it must be deeply disappointing to get so close to being accepted, and I expect that at the moment that's all you are focusing on. But what a fantastically encouraging rejection letter. Does that sound like an oxymoron? Not really, when you consider that the vast majority of what lands on their desks will be sent back without any compunction and not so much as a backward glance. And the fact that they would be pleased to see anything else that you write speaks volumes. Yes, if I were you I would also dust off that thriller and revive it. And in the meantime send your manuscript out to other agents. Good luck!

Good luck with the new TV, too.

Mac - I feel for your disappointment, but what a beautifully cushioned blow. Don't forget that these are professionals and their description of your writing is strong praise from a source not prone to flannel. What great encouragement plus you know you have many fans on here. It's obvious you'll keep going (I'm in awe of the number of projects past and present you manage to juggle) and I wish you the very best of luck with the next submissions.

Very encouraging, McAllan. Real praise there for the quality of your work and those agents obviously thought long and hard on this one so don't be too disappointed.

Take their advice on board and plug on. Better fortune next time.

This actually reads like a vote of confidence. They must have been impressed, or you would have just got a 'no thanks' form letter. Possibly the wrong agents to submit to? A agent who handles fantasy genre might snap it up!

Hi Mac - I echo the others. I would see this as an endorsement of your writing skills - which they praised - so that's great. The very last sentiment (please submit something else) makes it quite clear that the ONLY thing where they feel less comfortable about is the plot - they've given you a pointer (as it's outside their immediate area of expertise - it might work or it might not) - take that on board; would it be detrimental to rearrange the presentation, and try again?

Wow..and wow again! What a great bunch you all are. I've come over all unnecessary! *sniffle* I am very heartened really and will stick at it 'cos I don't do quitting!
This really does emphasise what a brilliant place this is and I can't thank you all enough.
Wrathy.....it wasn't the fantasy novel that I am posting in bits on the forum...it's my other one..'The Lemon Grove'...p'raps not your cup of tea.....not a tentacle in sight!
Oh and the new TV is fab too..:)

That's such a positive rejection - they don't say things like that (or anything at all) unless they really mean it! Very best of luck with it all.

Mac, as you know I enjoyed the bits of The Lemon Grove that I found time to read, as did a lot of people that read your posts. There's a good reason for that, of course. And now some positive professional feedback too. There's a bit of advice embedded in that letter, though. Perhaps you could mull it over for a while, then come the new year ...???
  • Mcallan

Yes Alan...lots of mulling to be done methinks!

Huge respect, Mac. Whether you decide to tweak it to their recommendations, try it with other agents or try sending this agent a different work, or all of the above, you are already a writer now, a pro. It's reaching this point that counts, not getting published. The rest is inevitable. You've got me all excited to read it now. I'll be first in line to buy a copy when you do get it on the shelves.

This is absolute proof that there is such a thing as a positive rejection. My editorial antennae did tweak a bit at hearing that your book hops round in the timeline a lot. I wonder if that might be worth looking at. You need to have a very good reason to distort your timeline. Just one more thing to mull along with the wine.

Let's hope 2011 will be the year everything comes together for you.
  • Mcallan

    Thanks for the encouragement Jules!
Hi Debi. Yes the timeline may be a prob, though I don't think it's a huge one. The story goes from present day then back to the WWII before concluding in the present day again...a full circle really. The main body of the book is during the war and moves forward in sequence with chapter titles saying where our hero is at that particular time. I suppose I could simply mention it in the narrative. The thing is I don't mind reading that type of book! Anyway, it is a very positive rejection!

Doesn't sound like the timeline is a problem - sounds like a classic frame story. Sometimes when an editor spots something like that as an issue, the tiniest tweak and then they will be perfectly happy with it. Good luck anyway, and have a great holiday!

If the timeline is their only problem, then it shouldn't be too tricky to sort out. Why not start in the past, then end in the present? Obviously, I haven't read it all, but it's just a thought. We all want to see you get this published, Mac!
  • Mcallan
    by Mcallan 1 year ago
Hi Mary..I did think of that...but that would mean ditching my first chapter...which is prob the best bit of writing in the whole thing!...I will ponder over the hols ha ha..:)
You have a great holiday too Jules.

There's nothing wrong with the circular structure you describe. I presume the rest of the book is chronological, building back up to the start point. If this is the only issue with the timeline, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

    Hey. :o( :oP :o :o)
As others say, the letter was very encouraging and they bothered to write some comments which means they must have liked it an awful lot. I just want to say PANTS. I wish that on such occasions when they obv love it, the agent would at least pass it by an editor/reader/publishing assstant just to see....? Afterall if they enjoyed it, why wouldn't the relevant publishers? (Esp newer/smaller trying to build a list?) It's great that you are going to try the old MS now too - will you put some on here??

    ;o)

I'd be thrilled with a rejection letter like that...............sorry, let me re-word that - I wouldn't be toooo disappointed to have received a letter like that. At least they took the time to read and digest and it seems that perhaps the only reason they didn't say yes was because it was on the fringes of their expertise! Don't be downcast Mac, onwards and upwards, good luck and enjoy the new TV! x
