"mike" commented on Old Fat Prop's Blog "Vanity Hardbound books...".As far as I am aware, a print-on-demand copy is printed from the same companies that produce books that appear on the shelves and libraries. mike wrote a new blog: "Sensibilty".It was at some point, between the passing of the old year and the emerging of the new, that I overdosed on Jane Austen. A week’s rural retreat would be of no avail, as I suspect I might well be encouraged in the habit. Self ...

by mockingbird 6 months agoAm I right in thinking the other day we were mentioning a link between a hack-writer and a Hackney carriage.
Just now I am reading a biography of Jane Austen, written in the late 1930's by an Elizabeth Jenkins. And I decided to Google her for some other info - found her obituary a year or so ago in the Telegraph - which contains the following interesting detail...'In 1947, when she was writing full-time, Elizabeth Jenkins published a life of Henry Fielding, a man who once said that he had to choose between being a hack writer and a hackney coachman.' Have I found the missing link? -
