"Bren" commented on mike's Blog "A bit of a mess".I did a search online Mike but all I could find were poems railing against the Industry. They thought the train lines slashed through the countryside and that the workers were treated badly. Even Tennyson writes in a similar vein. I sudied this ...

"mike" commented on mike's Blog "A bit of a mess".I have looked through some anthologies in which poetry is sorted according to period but could find nothing suitable. Blake is often included. I just don't know enough!! Southey was a Tory, but I couldn't find anything in his works. Mind ...

"FredaPeople" commented on mike's Blog "A bit of a mess".What an absolutely stunning question! Creative writing as an inherently left-wing activity. Who'da thought it! I've been racking my brains to 2 days and got nowhere. "Dark, satanic mills" of Jerusalem perhaps?

"mike" commented on Dave's Blog "Chinese get elves to keep up with work load".Very apt. I wonder if there are the equivalent of elves in Chinese culture? Don't they have various gods they put on the hearth? But I think this is Japanese culture? I think I have managed in patch things up with a Chinese friend as i had ...

mike wrote a new blog: "A bit of a mess".I have got myself into increasing messes. Last Monday I went for a walk in the country instead of going to work (I genuinely thought it was my day off and got to Cudham, near Downe, before I realised my mistake)To make amends, I ...

"mike" commented on mike's Blog "Careful with spellcheckers.".Can't spell! I am still bidding on E.Bay which can be rather time consuming. E.bay seems good for sellers but not for buyers. I was poorly over the weekend and did a bit of investigating. I am bidding against photographic dealers for anything ...

"mike" commented on mike's Blog "An international incident avoided.".Thanks Alan, The lens i want to clean cost £20 from Oxfam. It is one of the world's most produced lenses. It fits to the digital camera via a mount with a screw fitting. There are thus two screws - one for the lens and one for the camera. ...

"AlanP" commented on mike's Blog "An international incident avoided.".For what it's worth I think that fairy liquid and olive oil will not be a good solution for the long term. I once took apart a lens. Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.8; not in the league that you look at. I sought advice. The solution to freeing up the moving ...

"mike" commented on mike's Blog "An international incident avoided.".Someone out bid me by one pound for a Zorki camera and lens. It was a last minute dash. The seller called himself something like steptoe/yard. His site made me laugh but I suspect the camera came off the back of a lorry. I can get the lens ...

by mockingbird 10 months agoAm I right in thinking the other day we were mentioning a link between a hack-writer and a Hackney carriage.
Just now I am reading a biography of Jane Austen, written in the late 1930's by an Elizabeth Jenkins. And I decided to Google her for some other info - found her obituary a year or so ago in the Telegraph - which contains the following interesting detail...'In 1947, when she was writing full-time, Elizabeth Jenkins published a life of Henry Fielding, a man who once said that he had to choose between being a hack writer and a hackney coachman.' Have I found the missing link? -
