Tenacityflux Especially as mine was pure genius! No, of course not, but it would have been nice to be short listed - seeing as so many cloudies helped me with it! Oh well, can always try for something else ;)

I'd agree with you Cap/Ton - one should avoid the horrors of 'What do you mean?' he questioned, 'You know what I mean' she answered - but indeed, how different is the classic 'I love you' when either followed by 'he whispered' or 'he roared' - and ...

An interesting read, during which one is constantly comparing ones own work of course. I agree with many of them, the key being 'write' otherwise you are not really a writer, write no matter what and whenever and wherever you can. I would also agree ...

Tenacityflux Wracked with the deepest darkest depression about my work last night. Sent an email to a possible agent this morning, still depressed but I'd written on my calender that today was the day, so made myself do it anyway. So, there we go ... someone else can hate it now too!

Tenacityflux My mother was not a good cook. One time she attempted to make a sponge cake and accidentally summoned a minor demon. He was okay, he stayed with us for a while, but he was always hogging the bathroom. It was some time before mother attempted baking again.

Tenacityflux Ok - what is the difference between a hyphen and a dash - I mean, are they actually different characters on the key board?

Barb A hyphen is shorter than a dash. If you're using word and put a space either side, it will select a dash for you.

Tenacityflux Ok, because my editor keeps saying I'm using a hyphen when I should use a dash, and I can't seem to make it comeout any differently! -- - ? (Not morse code!)

EmmaD Word only turns it into a dash after you've typed the next word including the space after that next word - then the stubby little hyphen suddenly stretches! You could do 'find and replace' to change them all at once

EmmaD Alternatively, it's coming otu as an n-dash, when she wants an m-dash... which traditionally is used for the sort of dash at the end of a sentence, when it's interrupted. Try alt + the minus on the numberpad to get n-dash, and alt + the minus pressed twice, for the m-dash.

Tony You can quickly make an em dash in Word in two ways. If you leave a space before and after keying the hyphen, once you enter another space or punctuation mark after the next word, the hyphen will change into an em dash. An even longer dash can be inserted by keying two hyphens immediately after the preceeding word (no space). Again, when you enter a space or punctuation mark after the next word the two hyphens change into a dash (with no spaces either side).

Tenacityflux alt + the minus I get –, alt + the minus twice and I get --. No matter what I try, I only have one line type symbol, and my word doesn't change it no matter how many words or spaces precede it. I'm not sure what program the rest of the world uses, but mine doesn't do anything as described above - I have one kind of dash and it's the same as a hyphen!

Tenacityflux This may be a mac thing - buggered if I'm going to go through inserting weird symbols through an entire book, I think I'll leave that to an editor!

Barb On a Mac, hold down the alt key and the shift key, then press the minus key.

Barb Once you have one, you can copy it and use it to change all double hyphens in the document as Emma advised.

Tony Just to complete what I put above, if you want a long dash at the end of a sentence (i.e. with no following words) key the two hyphens then add any letter followed by a space to turn the hyphens into a dash. Then backspace twice to delete the space and letter that you don't need. All this works for Word on a PC. Don't know about Mac.

Tony I tried Emma's suggestion using the minus on the number pad (make sure Number Lock is on). I found that only 'ALT/CTRL + minus' works, and gives a long dash. But tht'a certainly the easiest method.

About

I am tall and red headed and size 10 with size 7 feet; I have tattoos, bigger than average; and a husband and a daughter who is 2. I love to cook for people and I make stuff, I sew, knit, build, make costumes and dance about in them. I still manage to go clubbing once a month although I am definately older to know better, and I like to walk. I have a cat not through choice, and I grow tomatoes on my balcony. I am dyslexic but I love writing, I always have, and my brother is a talented screen writer with films being made this year.
I am trying to set up a business based on my childrenswear designs, I have invented a unique garment called a Kimonii; and I also want to get published, have another baby and have another tattoo for my 40ith in September.

You, a rabbit? ... Was Michaelangelo a painter and decorating contractor?

You are extremely self aware and most talented people are not. Gives you a big advantage. I enjoy being neither while pretending to be both.
