Has no one ever used that title before? Seems amazing. Good luck.

"Alanboy" commented on Eddytip's Blog "Social media: trying to whip up a following".
Eddy, you say "How their writers find the time to dump so much rubbish is beyond me." But, I think that's the crucial point about these social sites; to the writers, they are engaging in small talk, and that gives them pleasure. To more ...

Ha, you beat me to it. What I want to know is if you spend time being hip and cool on awesome places like Twitter-my-face, how can you spend enough time on serious writing? My only diversion is WW, and it's enough. Maybe I need a brain transplant, ...

"Alanboy" commented on DLicorish's Blog "Why is "The Avengers" so good?".
Aren't most Hollywood movies these days aimed at US teenagers? Okay, I'm getting old, but from Dlicorish's description, I won't be watching. The Man City match gave me enough gut-wrenching drama to last a lifetime. Well, at least until their next ...

Ele. I'm not sure you should. Nettie is your creation. If her name is right for you, then stick with it. Making changes based on professional advice is one thing, but character names are purely personal. Anyway, in a straight choice, I would choose ...

I have an Aussie character who uses 'dunny' (the fact he uses it for his hotel bathroom is neither here nor there). I got it from a website of Aussie slang, but wasn't aware of its roots. I have to say 'Nettie' conjures up an image of an older ...

I can only speak for myself, but when I had a critique - very professionally done by WW - it annoyed me (to the point of self-flagellation) that I had submitted a work that ought to have been much better. Some of the points raised were ...

Whole-work critiques are vital if you're going to progress. Anyone who is scared is simply hiding their head in the sand - unless that person is writing purely for fun, of course.

"Alanboy" commented on CJ's Blog "Early Observation on the Nature of Ebooks".
I don't think your comments are controversial at all. How long does it take to write a novel? I think few writers who aim for quality, would measure the time in less than 1 year. (I stand to be corrected) I read about a self-pubber who thought he ...

Ha, Ele, you should have bid on the old clock I put up on Ebay. I made a point of highlighting that it needed attention, and probably specialist work. The eventual buyer moaned and moaned, and even though I told him to return it, he never did. I ...

Alanboy - I am so very, very close to doing so. Fortunately, there are enough good people to outweigh those who think themselves better than others. I just hate to see other people belittled in such a way - that is someone's hard work, and it should be critiqued with tact and understanding, not only out of respect for the writer, but also for the genre they write in. All genres have different conventions, and to apply a blanket approach to critique - 'my way or the highway, in this case' - is not only supremely unhelpful, but also wrong. Not everything out there adheres strictly to the 'contemporary' genre rulebook, and there is such a thing as personal style!

Dude, I really think you'll have to get over this laptop lid thing. It's dominating the cloud. And before you ask, just to damp down the fires. Black. And my new one. Black, I expect.

You've no idea, it makes me seethe with rage, it constantly makes me feel stupid and frustrated, I have great sympathy for people with speech impediments, as I write I feel constantly that everything I am trying to say tripped up by tiny errors I am just unable to see. Spell checker can see wrong words, but not the right words in the wrong place, my classic being in trouble for writing in an essay years ago 'Mary Tudours reign is remembered as violent but ineffectual, had she been able to see through her plans and been given the chance to rewrite history more fully, she might have been remembered as a revolutionary but she was thwarted because her reign was so shit.'

I meant short, in case you wonder.
